Russia is preparing to cut itself off from the internet in a move to protect themselves, but the people aren't happy about it, and why should they be? Although, is it possible they're just overreacting? Russian authorities are all for internet freedom and are actually the ones who rallied in Moscow over the weekend. This move is to protect them from foreign intrusion, or so it is said. RT says the following:

>But Peskov insisted that fears of the protestors that the legislation will put the web under strict state control were misplaced because “everybody stands for internet freedom – the authors of this law; the presidential administration; the government.”
<br />“In this regard, the position of the participants of the rally should be supported. But there can be no support for their misunderstanding and misconception that the draft law is in some way aimed at limiting online liberties.”
<br />What the authorities are doing is trying to “assure [the] viability of the Internet in case of potential aggressive actions in cyberspace against our country,” the press-secretary explained.

So what really seems to be going on here is a defence mechanism. While the protesters are worried that their government could shut them off from the web with a push of a button, the bigger threat for them is that someone outside of their government could push that switch (maybe someone in the US) and create a huge problem for the country!
