The Last year I have been participad on an Art contest held by OpenIDEO and the Hewlett Foundation, geared to make cybersecurity stock imagery both more interesting and less cliché. The main goal of this contest was created work exploring cybersecurity challenges such as phishing, encryption, the importance of multi-party cyber alliances and digital privacy.

I feel really honorable to have been selected as a part of a short list of 23 semi-finalists. It have been a real challenge to understand cyber security concepts and tried to express easily to anyone. I would like to show to all of you which have been these illustrations and the concepts that I want to express.

I decided to use the comic (black and white) as a way to express this concept topic, and use the humor as a way to entertain and at the same time educate people. This third entry (3/6) explain a basic idea: 

All the information on the internet is online and could be in the public domain, however, what allows to protect that information is a process called encryption. In ancient Rome the messengers had encrypted information that if taken by the enemy could not read unless they had the right code to decipher it. We know in history the importance of information, who has certain data has the privilege over others, the information gives power and advantage. Cryptography was key during World War II and, in fact, changed the course of the war. Cryptographers of the US Navy (in cooperation with British and Dutch cryptographers from 1940) broke several crypto systems of the Japanese Navy. The breakage of one of them, the JN-25, led to the celebrated American victory of the battle of Midway.

In synthesis, the encryption process is what allows us to protect confidential information, without this mechanism we would be vulnerable, practically naked at the glance of all.
