«Più gatti per tutti!»                     
Il piacere di adottare un animale domestico viene naturalmente associato al desiderio di condividere la propria esistenza con un affettuoso amico dotato di quattro zampe, una coda ed un paio di lunghi baffi. Ma, fino a non molti anni addietro, i residenti dei vetusti appartamenti di antichi palazzi ospitavano regolarmente uno o più gatti per combattere la presenza dei sorci che, come anche vari tipi di insetti, si insinuavano con facilità all'interno delle abitazioni. I felini domestici non si sono mai limitati a svolgere il loro dovere, ma sono diventati sistematicamente i veri padroni della casa.

Durante gli anni bui del Medio Evo gli innocui micetti subirono la medesima “caccia alle streghe” di innocenti signore con le quali avevano in comune la predilezione per il letto e la cucina e tanto era ritenuto sufficiente per sopprimere sia gli esseri umani che le bestiole. Qualche secolo più tardi, invece, si diffuse l'opinione opposta, espressa nel modo di dire “Dio creò il gatto per concedere all’uomo il piacere di accarezzare la tigre.”

Tranne, comprensibilmente, coloro che risultano allergici al pelo dei gatti, restiamo tutti affascinati dall'eleganza dei felini. Bisogna riconoscere che gli esemplari appartenenti alle razze più pregiate,  presenti immancabilmente a tutte le mostre, possiedono certe caratteristiche che rendono ogni micio particolarmente attraente, tuttavia, saranno,  comunque, i gatti comuni a conquistarsi sempre  le carezze e la simpatie dei “gattofili” più ostinati.

Ogni gatto sviluppa un carattere e manifesta un modo del tutto personale di partecipare agli eventi domestici della famiglia che lo accoglie e della quale diventa un effettivo componente. Come tutte le  convivenze, anche quella con il micio di casa si basa su un  rapporto assolutamente “paritario”, in tal modo, tra gli esseri umani ed il gatto si instaura una speciale intesa fondata sul rispetto  reciproco.

Inoltre,  ricorrere alla cosiddetta pet-therapy favorisce il trattamento clinico di molte patologie. Sono stati, infatti, dimostrati diversi benefici derivati dal rapporto con un docile animale da affezione.
