<div class="text-justify">

Friends of @ADSactly, this time I want to share a selection of photos of my own where the central object is tree logs; they belong to an extensive and unfinished love of photographing that essential material, as I have done with sea stones, crags, and so on. In this case it is about the same tree, from Guaiquerí Park in the city of Cumaná (Venezuela).

The perspectives from which the trees can be contemplated and thought are diverse. In my case, for this opportunity, my gaze has focused on their compact or bifurcated conformation, especially in their stem, those big logs that have been covered with a rough and hard skin, of heterogeneous forms.

Trees have also given rise to poetic texts at different times and latitudes. One that I consider unavoidable is the poem "A un elm seco", included in *Campos de Castilla*, the most relevant book by the great Spanish poet [Antonio Machado](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antonio_Machado). Below I reproduce his first four stanzas:

#

>In the old elm tree, carved open by lightning
And already half-rotten,
Some green leaves sprout
Come April rains and the sunshine in May.

>The century-old elm atop the hill
By the river Duero! A yellowish moss
Smudges the tree’s off-white coat
Over the dusty, worm-eaten trunk.

>It won’t be home to brown nightingales, no,
The way rustling poplar trees are,
Them guarding the river bank and the road.

>An army of ants climb the tree
In a single file, and deep in its bowels
Spiders weave their grey webs.

Machado pays a heartfelt tribute to that old tree that may be in a forest, a path or a square, and that, over the years, has become the dwelling of other beings, while time and the weather have left their marks on his body. However, old and rotten, he is capable of delivering a bud - a simple and profound metaphor for life!

Another great universal poet, the Mexican [Octavio Paz](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Octavio_Paz), Nobel Prize in Literature in 1990, has in his last book, published in 1987, a lucid poem titled "A Tree Within" (which gives name to the book), which he totally copied:

#

>A tree grew within my head.
A tree grew in.
Its roots are veins,
Its branches nerves,
Thoughts its tangled foliage.
Your glance sets it on fire,
And its fruits of shade
Are blood oranges
And pomegranates of the flame.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Day breaks
In the body’s night.
There, within, inside my head,
The tree speaks,
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Come closer – can you hear it?

<center>(You can read an English version at this [link](http://www.angelfire.com/on/flykites/Poems.html))</center>

#

Paz, making use of the ancient, noble and poetic resource of analogy, constructs this text in which tree and man correspond. The poet (or the human being in general), as the making of nature, seems to resemble in its interior the arboreal corporeality, because, as Rilke would say, when I think of the tree, it's done to me.

The outstanding contemporary Venezuelan poet, [Eugenio Montejo](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eugenio_Montejo), has one of the most beautiful poems I have read about trees, and its title is precisely "The Trees". We reproduce his first stanza

#

>The trees speak so little, you know.
They spend their entire life meditating
and moving their branches.
Just look at them closely in autumn
as they seek each other out in public places:
only the oldest attempt some conversation,
the ones that share clouds and birds,
but their voice gets lost in the leaves
and so little filters down to us, nothing really.

<center>(You can read a full English version at this [link](http://www.latinamericanliteraturetoday.org/en/2018/august/five-poems-eugenio-montejo)</center>

#

Humanizing the trees, the poetic voice presents these as patient, silent, wise beings who harmonize others in their environment and remain in their center.

In another opportunity we will be able to continue sharing poems about trees. For now, I leave you one of mine written especially for these photos.

<h4>
Cortexes and folds,

protuberances and hollows,
curvatures and elevations,
the tree is cemented,
is plumbed and erected
on his aged body,
about his permanence,
early testimony
that interrogates us.
</h4>

Thank you for your kind appreciation, @saifulshahid. Old trees have a special attraction for me, perhaps because of their permanence in time, their firmness and solidity, and as if they treasured a certain "wisdom". Greetings.

@josemalavem, **Trees** are great motivation every time i look and some trees also reflects as great piece of art. In some cases we see natural carvings on **Trees** which reflects as these trees are **Reincarnated** from last life and these carvings on them are proof of that. Stay blessed.

Right, @chireerocks. The trees themselves are a beautiful work of nature. And when we look at them with attention, more if it is artistic, they reveal us and give us forms that enrich our soul and aesthetic delight. Thank you for your comment.

Being a wood worker, I totally enjoy all posts about these magnificent giants. To think of the history that has passed during this tree's life is hard to fathom. I have done many posts about trees and furniture making. I would just like to share with you one tree that caught my eye.

Thanks for your attention, @thebigsweed. Indeed, trees could silently guard much of our history as a universe. I appreciate your dedication to the noble art of wood. I don't know where you are from; in this part where I live there are also attractive trees very similar to the one you show us in your photo (I have some photos of them). Greetings.

I love banyan trees, and came to really respect them, when I lived in Florida.

Unfortunately, where I lived it occasionally froze in the winter, so I knew they were unlikely to live long term.

But they are without doubt one of the mist magnificent trees on the planet.

I've been a woodworker as well, and used to own and operate an art and framing gallery in Florida. I've also made furniture from time to time.

Despite being a woman, my birthday present from my then-husband in 1993 was a Porter Cable Laser-loc chop saw, which I not only used for years in my framing business, but still have and use.

And my most recent birthday present, from my husband Marek, was a Milwaukee 18V drill driver set.

Some things never change. ;-)

@crescendoofpeace ·
What a magnificent specimen: I dearly love old and gnarled trees.

Thanks so much for your wonderful photos, and for including the snippets of poetry, most of which I had not run across before. And, as a poet myself, I really appreciate them.

I grew up in California, and so fell in love early on with the coast redwoods, and while traveling all over the desert Southwest as a kid, fell in love with Big Cone and Ponderosa pines, and with so many more species besides.

I wrote a poem years ago, called "Wooden Bowls and Wooden Spoons," about our tendency as humans to take for granted those things around us, and particularly the rather mundane items made from wood that we use every day.

And yet, using a simple wooden cutting board as an example, after you chop food on the surface, ___even if you fail to clean it off,___ the wood immediately goes to work disabling any harmful bacteria on the surface, eventually killing them, using the innate defenses from the tree that it once was.

Try ___that___ with plastic!

Thank you for this lovely post.

Thank you for your visit and your valuation, and also for sharing these kind testimonials, @crescendoofpeace. I admire your character as a lover and woodworker.
Since I saw photos of the redwoods I was impressed by their height and the thickness of their trunk. I don't know much about trees in specialized terms, but I think that among those that grow taller and wider in Venezuela are the ceibas (by the way, a few weeks ago I shared a photo of one of them in a [post published in Steemit](https://steemit.com/steempress/@josemalavem/ceibamadrefotografaypoema-irmis8mo3y)).
It would be interesting to know the poem he refers to.
Greetings.

I love trees so much! They are so noble and quiet. Montejo's poem is a beauty, almost that one feels the swaying of the trees, their stamp, their smell, their breathing. When I was a little girl I remember that in the middle of the house there was a tree where we used to climb, play and observe the world from there. Its branches offered us shelter and a kind of birdlike freedom. Beautiful images and meaningful poems. Greetings, @josemalavem

It is truly a joy that we have grown up with trees in and around our homes, and that we can touch them, climb them, take their fruits, love them, in short. I wish everyone had that chance! Having had or having that contact with the trees makes our life different, because, as you say, they are more than themselves: light, shade, green, breeze, birds, silence ...
Thank you for your comment, @nancybriti.

This reminds me of the first time I visited Puerto Rico, and we visited a complex in which all the homes had central atriums, with openings in the roof, so that the trees and plants benefited from the natural rainfall.

Though I'm guessing it might not be the best design in case of hurricane, I fell in love with them, and would still like to have something similar.

@owasco ·
Beautiful photographs as always. I wonder how many of them are of the same tree. All maybe.
I love the poems that speak with a common speaking voice. For instance, at the end of both the first and last lines of Montejo's poem. And Paz: *come closer - can you hear it?" .
Your poem is also very provacative, blurring testimony of trees with human self reflection, or interrogation of self.
I just finished a book you might like. The Overstory, by Richard Powers I think.
nice post. thanks.

Thank you always for your attentive visit and appreciation, @owasco. The photos are all from the same tree. Yes, I also like poems whose voice is close to the common voice, as I have discussed in my articles here by the Venezuelan poet Rafael Cadenas. Greetings.
PS: Thank you for the recommended book. I suppose that in Venezuela it will be difficult to achieve it.
