 This image is my entry for @juliank’s architectural photography competition. It is a perfect demonstration of why you should always have your camera with you, as you never know when a photographic opportunity will present itself. This series of images was taken in 2013 when I was in the United Kingdom visiting my brother who lives and works there. We were driving from York back towards Northampton. Anyone who has spent any time in the UK will know that as you drive down most roads, every few miles or so you will see a brown heritage sign, pointing you in the direction of a historic building or site. As we were in no hurry this day, we decided to explore a few of these sites at random. We turned off the main road at the next sign that we saw, and were directed to an historic monastery. Unfortunately, it was late in the afternoon and the facility was closed for the day. Unperturbed, we returned to the main road and drove until we came to next heritage sign. Turning down this road, and following it for several miles, we eventually came upon the site shown in this sequence of photographs. It was one of the most enjoyable shoots that I have done. The scenery, the lighting, and most importantly the buildings were perfect. The site is a 13th century monastery that was subsequently razed by the English king in the religious wars of the late medieval period in England. Even some centuries later the buildings retain their grandeur. I’ve often wondered what the original facility must have looked like in its full glory. I hope that you enjoy my post. All images are unedited, and taken with Canon 500D, with a Canon 55-250 mm lens.
