Many years ago I read Ibsen's verse play, *Peer Gynt*.  I've always been a fan of folklore and of literature that teases the imagination, so it was little wonder that this play charmed me.  Several scenes in the play blend modern notions of the absurd with traditional Norwegian mythology.  One of these scenes takes place in the mountains with the King of the Trolls.  

Peer Gynt is a person of little character, and when the trolls are done with him he has relinquished even that sorry fragment of personhood.  It was this troll scene I thought of  when I saw @shaka's photograph.

This impression of a troll king was rendered by Swedish illustrator, [John Bauer.](http://www.artpassions.net/bauer/bauer.html)  Bauer was best known perhaps for illustrating a book of legends and myths called *Among Gnomes and Trolls*.  He called this picture, *King of the Hill*.

The caption accompanying this picture explains that, according to legend, most Norwegian mountains are made of trolls :).

Finally, here is an illustration from a 1936 edition of Ibsen's *Peer Gynt*, the play that worked on my imagination when I saw @shaka's photo.    The picture shows Gynt as he meets the Troll King.
