WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Scientists at the US space agency NASA have discovered the fate of a mysterious island that suddenly appeared four years ago in the South Pacific, after reports confirmed it would disappear again.

NASA scientists in the mysterious island, which was formed between December 2014 and January 2015 due to a volcanic eruption between the largest islands in the state of Tonga, according to Fox News.

A volcano erupted between the islands of Honga Tonga and Honga Hibai, forming the third volcanic island to appear 150 years ago and is not believed to be disappearing due to the waters of the Pacific Ocean, scientists said.

Many of the islands are formed by marine volcanoes, but they are disappearing due to ocean water, erosion, or collapse.

Last October, a team of NASA scientists visited the island to understand whether the island would remain permanently or not, recorded observations and sampled them.
Among the observations recorded by scientists is the presence of mud silt, which allows the growth of plants, which they believe came from the waves to the island, and that the source is the crater.

They also noticed a slight vegetation cover, some birds such as white owl and a type of gull.

NASA scientist Dan Slipak believes the island will remain and will not disappear or disappear as easily as in some cases previously observed.

The island is of particular importance to NASA, as it may recall the ancient Mars, giving the space agency ideas on how volcanic landscapes interact with water on the ancient Red Planet.

In 2017, NASA said it expected the island to remain between 6 and 30 years before disappearing again.
