On Sending My Friend Off: Big And Small Thoughts On Death And The Wake

<h1>Yesterday I said goodbye to my friend on the last day of his wake. He was cremated this morning.</h1>
<p>Here are some of my thoughts, both big and small laid out:</p>
<ul>
  <li><strong>It was the most unique wake I've ever come across. My friend was a DJ and had mad passion for music. Yesterday, they held a memorial for him. The place had a DJ console and everything. Music was played throughout before the service. His friend, took the mic at one point and told us that my friend would have liked it if we all got up, mingled, chilled and even danced.</strong></li>
  <li>One look at the place, and you could tell half us belonged to the Hip Hop community.&nbsp;</li>
  <li>I managed to catch up with some old friends I have no seen in a long time, which was great albeit the less-than-desirable circumstances. It's true what they say, death brings the living together.</li>
  <li><strong>We had a service for him at the end. It was a Christian one. That was peculiar as I was told my friend wasn't a christian. It was the same as my dad's wake. My dad wasn't a believer, but my religious relatives somehow took charge anyway. The living always takes over in the end.</strong></li>
  <li>I actually attended the wake twice. I was told that my friend had few relatives here as most of them were in Taiwan. On the first night, the mom, a pleasant, elderly Taiwnese lady asked if we were going to come again. That made me decide to come for the second time.</li>
  <li><strong>My friend's sister gave a eulogy for him. She said how she thought they had more time and that she didn't get a chance to say she loved him. She also said how any form of unhappiness in the past didn't matter anymore (my friend chose to go to New York to pursue his passion for music and initially, his family didn't like it.) Time is truly limited and life is unpredictable. This kind of makes me want to set things straight with some people in my life.</strong></li>
  <li><strong>I spotted the mom smiling and grooving to the music. She mentioned this is how her son would have liked it too. A mother's strength is one of the purest, bravest and most powerful in the world. Imagine the pain she has inside, but still managed to stay strong for the rest of us attending the wake. Imagine the ordeal she went through as she watched her son deteriorate and die at his last moments.</strong></li>
  <li>People took pictures and videos of the place. This is odd, but I guess it's acceptable today.&nbsp;</li>
  <li><strong>At the end, we all said our final goodbyes as we approached the open casket. I spotted one guy who was on a video call with another friend. He then asked another friend, who was present if he wanted to help bring the guy in the video to the coffin. I guess the guy in the video could not be come for the wake. Technology certainly has made it easier for us to be connected, even in sombre circumstances. It was nice that the guy in the video really wanted to see my friend for the last time.</strong></li>
