Accompanied by the guide we visited the Vatican Museums; you can walk from the square along the thick walls of the papal city to the entrance to the Vatican Museums on Viale Vaticano. The last entrance to the museum is at 4 pm, the visiting hours are between 9 am and 6 pm and the last Sunday of the month the Vatican can be visited for free. At the entrance to the museum there is another security checkpoint and the tourist information point. There are many museums and it is impossible to see everything in one day. The guide showed us what was most important. The interior of these museums houses thousands of works of art, sculptures, maps, tapestries, gathered by the popes of the Catholic Church over several centuries. A lot of tourists want to visit the museums. It is almost impossible to take photos.

The first collection of the Vatican Museums was donated by Pope Julius II in 1503. The initiative of Pope Julius II was then continued by Pope Clement XIV, Pope Pius VI and Pope Gregory XVI, as well as other popes who have succeeded throughout history. The Vatican Museums opened their doors to the public in the 18th century. From the entrance you can follow several directions that take you all to the Sistine Chapel, the place that any tourist wants to see if he arrives in Rome. After the terrace, on the right side is the Pinacoteca whose works of art are arranged in chronological order. It has 18 halls with works from the Middle Ages until 1800.

Pinacoteca. Impressive paintings of the greatest Italian painters and more. Among the most important works are the works of Raphael, the Madonna of Foligno and the Transfiguration, the works of Perugino: The Resurrection of San Francesco al Prato, the Virgin and Child and the Saints; Saint Jerome in the Wild signed by Leonardo da Vinci; Giotto's Stefaneschi triptych; Burial of Caravaggio, Coronation of Marsuppini painted by Filippo Lippi; The Virgin and Child signed by Fra Angelico and Madonna del Magnificat by Bernardo Daddi.

Cortile della Pigna, which in translation means the courtyard of the pine cone. At the exit of the Art Gallery, visit this inner courtyard where there is an impressive fountain dating from the 1st century and it was brought to the basilica from the Campus Martires to drink water from the pilgrims in it. The Chiaramonti Museum was designed by Antonio Canova and here are exhibited busts of emperors and gods. The Pio Clementino Museum, founded by Pope Clement XIV in 1771, houses a large collection of ancient sculptures, the most important of the Vatican. The papal apartment Pio V, the work of Pope Pio V, brings together a collection of 15th and 16th century tapestries, a collection of medieval pottery and miniature medieval mosaics.
