One of the most unique marine fish known to man is the flying gurnard (flying gurnard), a kind of sea dweller. The name "gurnard" in this fish comes from the French "gurnard" which is more or less the meaning of 'snoring' because this fish is known to make sound like a snoring sound. The "fly" fly on the fish is somewhat misleading because although it has a very large pectoral fins & resembles wings commonly used by other animals to fly, these fish actually can not fly at all.

There are several species of flying gurnard known to humans where everything belongs to the Dactylopteridae family. Habitat spread of gurnard fish flying widely where the majority is found in the shallow waters of the Indies-Pacific (including Indonesia of course), while a small part can be found in the shallow sea region of the Atlantic Ocean. The size of these fish also varies where the species Dactylopterus volitans - the gurnard species flying from the Atlantic waters & is the largest species known to man - is known to reach a maximum size of 50 cm.

The main characteristic of the flying gurnard fish that attracts the most attention is of course its very large pectoral fins & a cursory look like wings or fans. The main function of the pectoral fin is not to fly, but for self-defense. Normally, the flying gurnard fish will fold the pectoral fin beside the body. But when he feels threatened by the presence of his enemy like a mackerel fish, this fish will spread his pectoral fins to make himself look bigger in the hope that his enemy will feel the fear & then retreat.

In addition to wing-like flippers, the flying gurnard fish is also notorious for its "legs" that can be used to walk & uncover the rocks at the bottom of the ocean (see video). This part of the "foot" itself is actually a kind of modified pelvic fins to help it move on the ocean floor. Gurnard fish flies alone include basic sea animals such as crustaceans (shrimp & their relatives), shellfish, & small fish.

Adaptation of flying gurnard fish to live on the seabed does not get there. In addition to having the fin resembles a "foot" that helps it move on the seabed, the color of his body also resembles the color of the sand on the seabed where he lives so that this fish can hide from the view of his enemy. Not only that, this fish also has a thick & rough scales that may also have a connection for protection and self-defense purposes. And because it's so thick & heavy scales that wrap around its body, these fish can not swim too far from the bottom of the ocean.

Gurnard fish fly is not a fish that is often caught by fishermen, but lately this fish began to have commercial value as a pet fish. Maintaining a flying gurnard is actually quite simple & does not vary much with the techniques of raising other saltwater fish. His behavior as a carnivorous fish seabed also makes it possible to keep the bottom of the tank clean. The thing to note is, the aquarium used for maintenance must be large because some species are known to grow up to the size of half a meter. Plus, this fish should also get extra attention when it will be moved because the fish can thrashed very strongly & its sharp scales make it trapped on the net easily.
