Garden Stories, Growing Tomatoes In My Greenhouse

Hello, steemers and garden lovers!

For this post, I'd like to show you the tomato plants that I grew in my greenhouse over the summer.

Every year for the past 5 years that I've had my greenhouse, I've grown some of my tomato plants in the greenhouse. I start all of my tomato plants in the greenhouse, usually at the end of April or beginning of May. I start the seeds in the house, and then bring them out to the greenhouse at the end of April. Some of the tomato plants that I start get planted out in the garden, but I always plant 10 tomato plants in the big pots in the greenhouse.

The front of my greenhouse faces south, and there's enough space against the front wall for ten of the big pots that I use. I think they're 15 gallon pots, but I'm not sure if I remember that right. Tomato plants need a lot of root space to grow well, so I use the biggest pots that will fit in the greenhouse, but not be too big to work around.

This is the plants that I started, this is from the third of May.

Here is May 12, and I'm planting the little tomato plants in the big pots.

This from May 17, and I have the watering system set up on the pots.

I water the plants from a 50 gallon plastic barrel that I put a faucet in the bottom of. I fill the barrel and the water gets a chance to warm up before I use it on the plants. I usually fill the barrel from my rain water catching system.
![DSCN4770.JPG](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmNwwYgT5npDBuZ6snj6YFjs9rUp1kjmTB2KqUybGSuZfT/DSCN4770.JPG)

This picture is from May 21. You can see the plants in the big pots are growing. The plants in the small red pots are waiting to be planted out in the garden. I usually wait until the end of May when the danger of frost at night is just about done. Sometimes I have to cover the plants at night in early June after they've been planted outside due to a late frost.
With the greenhouse plants, I don't have to worry about frost at night.

![DSCN4834.JPG](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmeDLEhaP9y3TXiciBB2w5SQTtx2iwSKY1FrjvwfMM289f/DSCN4834.JPG)

These pictures are from June 11. The plants in the greenhouse are growing nicely. It's hard to see in the pictures, but most of the plants have started putting out flowers.

By July 7th, the tomato plants are full of flowers and small green tomatoes. Also, some of the plants have grown up to the roof of the greenhouse. All of these plants are paste tomato type plants. There are 4 Amish Paste heirloom plants, 4 Roma plants, and 2 Blue Beech heirloom tomato plants.
These are the Amish Paste plants.

Here's a couple of close up pictures of the baby tomatoes on the plants.

At the end of July, you could see the tomatoes hanging in the plants.

![DSCN5324.JPG](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmaGFAwe6cRfsQ3ZcADUbbtNRZTbZ36EADJRd7dzp2YZg1/DSCN5324.JPG)

By the middle of August, I was getting ripe tomatoes from the plants. I had cut the tops off most of the plants to keep them from overgrowing the available space.

![DSCN5487.JPG](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmRMNpUwhwNSFAsaoW4j5DeXvsE4ex9c7u1NDwjKXrjvmo/DSCN5487.JPG)

![DSCN5489.JPG](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmPq8vhAJkpwoDNxEhA32z55iCPCoigqBfxRam8Sjpaepo/DSCN5489.JPG)

More ripe tomatoes on August 24.

![DSCN5553.JPG](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmXYucxcU6nT1W9LdBs9GXb7MoRCvp9iKCDHcRRBqRSykF/DSCN5553.JPG)

These tomatoes were picked on August 29.

![DSCN5571.JPG](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmew8qyWQQXaAA86f2bJjBStfAAhMNK2kTYB7N6Sha4ynQ/DSCN5571.JPG)

I had several good pickings from the greenhouse tomato plants, which I mostly processed for tomato sauce. By the end of September, the tomato plants were just about done giving me tomatoes. There were still a few tomatoes on the plants, but not very many.

![DSCN5663.JPG](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmUxQUSJR52hoH8N1wd7nNVy4tBPrqZL4y83EcsXe3BRN8/DSCN5663.JPG)

I still have the 4 Roma tomato plants in the greenhouse, the rest of them were done and I removed them. I'm keeping the 4 plants just to see how late into the fall they stay alive in the greenhouse. They'll live until it gets cold enough at night to freeze the plants in the greenhouse.

This was a good year for tomatoes for my garden.

That's all I have for this gardening post, I hope you found it to be interesting!

This is a great insight. I want to grow my own vegetables but I am not able to. You have mentioned that you heat the water, any particular reason for that?
