Situated just around thirty kilometers from the north of the Island of the Gulf of Mexico, Isla Contoy is a small, encapsulated Island on the Free and Sovereign States of Mexico. The island covers the area of 3.17 kilometers square and is 8.5 km in length.
Since its creation in 1961, this Island has been under the supervision of the Mexican government, and in February 1988, it was acclaimed as a national government. However, the Secretary of Environment, Natural Resources and Fishing, and the non-governmental organizations unanimously operate the Island that is now a National Park.
As far as the tourists' attractions are concerned, the anglers or the people who are fond of fishing can take part in commercial fishing that is regulative in nature. Also, the island fosters supervised eco-tourism. At a time, the tour companies that are responsible for giving the visiting tourists the stroll of the Island can only accommodate a maximum of 200 people at a time. So, at different park offices situated at Cancun, visitors need to apply for permission to visit the island.
The wildlife on the island includes four exclusive species of turtles who find beautiful refuge on the beaches of the island. They include the loggerhead turtle, Hawksbill turtle, Green turtle, and leatherback turtle. Furthermore, different kinds of marine and migratory birds also find refuge on this Island. They are around 152 tropical marine birds such as brown pelican, frigate bird, and double-crested cormorant.
Moreover, the island also offers vast areas of sandy beaches that are secluded in nature, and the lush palm trees give the island an unparalleled beauty. The additional amenities of the Island include a visitor center with levee, museum, dressing rooms, museum, a relaxing spot that has benches and palapas, a store that stocks different kinds of souvenirs and a barbeque grill spots where families and group of friends can gather for a warm dinner. Also, from a twenty-meter high watch tower and the two walking paths, the people can speculate the wonders of nature on both fauna and flora from a distance or from near.
Also, the museum is in the process of constructing an underwater archeological museum and the artificial habitat that will be inaugurated soon in the early months of this year. The visitors are also expected to bring their sunglasses, caps, sunscreen, mosquito repellent, cameras, and binoculars for long distance viewing of nature and scenery
