The Buddy Holly Center is a visual and performance art center dedicated to Buddy Holly and is located in the city of Lubbock, Texas. The city of Lubbock was able to gather enough artifacts from Buddy Holly’s estate in 1996 and purchased the Fort Worth and Denver South Plains Railway depot for setting up the center. The new Buddy Holly Center was opened in 1999. This is a place which amalgamation of artists and musicians. There are many cultural programs organized in the center that helps in establishing an interaction and connection between the artist and the local community.
The center also preserves a number of artifacts belonging to Buddy Holly along with some artifacts from other musicians and artists belonging to West Texas. The talent of the artists is celebrated by displaying their work in the visual arts arena. The center has a permanent gallery with a collection of belongings of Buddy Holly in the form of artifacts and documents. Apart from that, there is the Texas Musician Hall of Fame, the Lubbock Fine Arts Gallery and three additional visual arts galleries. A statue of Buddy Holly made by sculptor Grant Speed is located inside the Buddy and Maria Elena Holly Plaza in the West Texas Walk of Fame.
The Buddy Holly museum has a number of documents and objects from the collection of Buddy Holly including fan letters, postcards, stage clothing, a recording microphone, business cards, letters to different people, etc. Also, there is information about his life and his achievements in chronological order inside the museum. Next is the Foyer Museum which is the permanent exhibition of a lot of records along with a replica of his J200 Gibson guitar model. This is a tribute to his dream of educating and extending music to people of the city and the country.
There are a number of art and art forms that are exhibited temporarily in the museum that ranges from underwater to a diverse range of photography. The Buddy Holly Center provides a wide range of education in the form of a workshop, classes as well as through invitation of artists. The Buddy Holly gallery is closed every Monday, during 24th and 25th December and 1st January. The entry fee for the general public is $8.00, for senior citizens it is $6.00, for children aged from 7 to 17 years it is $5.00, students with ID can enter at $5.00, and museum members have lifetime free entry.
