Good morning Steemit! Every single one of us has both antioxidants and free radicals inside their body. What are they and why do we hear so much about them? 

# Antioxidants and Free Radicals
--------
Some antioxidants are made by the body itself, while others are coming from high antioxidant foods - such as kale and blueberries - that double as anti-inflammatory foods. 

But why do we need antioxidants? Well, our bodies produce free radicals as byproducts of cellular reactions. To give you a few examples, the liver produces and uses free radicals to detoxify the body while white blood cells use free radicals to kill bacteria and viruses, and eliminate damaged cells.

Free radicals are highly reactive types of oxygen molecules that travel freely in the body and cause what’s known as oxidative damage. These free radicals are neutralized by antioxidants. When, however, free radical levels exceed antioxidant levels - due to poor nutrition, toxin exposure or other body damaging factors - oxidation can wreak serious havoc on the body. 

Some of the effects include accelerated aging, damaged or mutated cells which may lead to cancer or other diseases, broken-down tissue, the activation of harmful genes within DNA, and an overactive immune system.

Our Western lifestyle - packed with processed foods, medications, and high exposure to environmental chemicals and pollutants — is laying the foundation for excess amounts of free radicals traveling through the body. 

### That's why we need to consume a lot of high antioxidant foods. Ready to get an antioxidant boost? This pink green smoothie will give you just that.

High antioxidant foods include goji berries, blueberries, dark chocolate, pecans, artichokes, kidney beans cilantro, tomatoes, carrots, pumpkin seeds, sweet potatoes, pomegranates, strawberries, kale, broccoli, grapes or red wine, squash, and wild-caught salmon.

## Ingredients
-------
* 2 cups fresh kale
* 1 to 2 cups unsweetened coconut water (or filtered water)
* 1 orange, peeled
* 1 cup pineapple
* 1 cup blueberries
* 1/2 avocado
* 1-2 tbsp coconut oil
FYI: I had a little pink dragon fruit left so added that too ;) 

## Directions
------
1. Blend kale and coconut water until smooth. Add remaining ingredients and blend again. If the smoothie is too thick, add more water and blend again until smooth. If you have a high-speed blender you can throw in everything at once.
2. Optional: Top with hemp hearts or other superfoods/toppings you like.
