Dion Waiters would welcome Kyrie Irving to Miami under one condition
Over the years, Dion Waiters has established himself as one of the NBA’s most outspoken players.

While his on-court play improved last season when he averaged 15.8 points, 3.3 rebounds and 4.3 assists over 30.1 minutes per contest, some of his hilarious antics and ridiculous comments have gotten a lot of attention along the way.

When Kyrie Irving reportedly listed Waiters’ Miami Heat as one of his four preferred trade destinations, Waiters was surprisingly silent, given the fact that he re-signed with the Heat to become one of the team’s go-to scorers next season

But, on Friday, Waiters made some eyebrow-raising comments about Irving to HipHopSince1987.com, detailing his thoughts on his team making a deal for Irving.

“It would help,” Waiters said. “I’m not against that. Just know there’s an alpha male over there too in myself. I think that’s my biggest thing with everybody saying, ‘Oh, he got irrational confidence.’ Man, like I tell everybody, if I can make it from here, I can make it from anywhere. My mom got shot. My dad got shot. C’mon, bro, there ain’t nothing I haven’t seen. Why not? I need that confidence to get through. Every day I need that confidence to get by. It ain’t got nothin’ to do with ball. It’s who I am. It was instilled in me, man. But you know there’s an alpha male over there already. If you come down, we can boogie together.”

He would welcome Irving, but only under the pretense that Irving understood that the team already has an alpha male on the roster. He came up just short of calling Miami his team.

Waiters and Irving played for the Cleveland Cavaliers together, going 57-107 combined over the 2012-2013 and 2013-2014 campaigns. Therefore, obvious questions about their chemistry would arise if Irving is somehow dealt to South Beach.

Midway through last season, Waiters made sure everyone knew he was brimming with confidence, even when struggling shooting the basketball.

“I’d rather go 0-for-30 than 0-for-9 because if you go 0-for-9 that means you stopped shooting,” Waiters told reporters after struggling during a February contest. “That means you lost confidence.” Although head coach Erik Spoelstra once called Waiters’ confidence “irrational”, he also pointed out that it could be a major positive if utilized properly.

“He’s got exceptional confidence and if we can bottle it and funnel it and drive it in the right way, that’s a positive thing,” Spoelstra noted. “He is meeting us more than half way. You can see his versatility. You can see just the skill level that he has. He is unique in his ability to attack off the dribble, but he can also shoot the ball and defend.”

Based on the premise that Irving intends on becoming the face of another franchise, he may want to cross the Heat off of his list after hearing these comments from his former teammate.
