Parents, be ready to pick up the gauntlet when your teenager finishes school?

The high school days are over, your teenager has graduated.  Does he/she know what to do, where to go and what is his/her purpose?  Teaching is political and competitive amongst the many high schools in the state and private systems. 

This means that they track the school graduates over the first year mapping to see their post schooling pathways.  How many go to university, how many choose apprenticeships with trades, how many go into jobs and how many don't?   Schools rate their success this way.  The other important selling point for schools is the rate of academic achievement by students.  Parents have been known to select schools based on student performance.

The teenagers who need to be home schooled because of bullying issues, illnesses or mental health problems are not on the school's radar.   It is the parents who take over giving their adolescent the personal and educational help that they need.  

*Keith, a dad of an 18 year old had to withdrawn from school when he was 16 due to extreme bullying that resulted in depression and post traumatic syndrome disorder (PTSD).  He was homeschooled and under the constant care of a psychiatrist and counsellors.  Keith says that his son is doing okay, he is unsure if he will ever recover from his mental health problems.*

But what if your teenager decides to have a gap year after school or a year off after one year of study at uni.  It is the not the school that is following up it is the parents.  The mums and dads are the ones who care, who are on the other end of the phone, who check to see if all is okay.  When there are problems the young person calls the parents. 

*Julie and Dan supported their daughter Ellie after she left uni at the end first year.  Ellie wanted to live life by working and travelling.  They never stopped supporting her, always positive and lovin.  Julie and Dan's  expectation that she would completed her studies was effective.   After 7 years she finished  her Science Degree and is now studying medicine.*

School days end, parenting never does.  Parents play the most significant role in their kid's lives.  Never underestimate your value mums and dads.

The value of supportive parents be underestimated. I was put on notice by my father from about year nine, he said i"f you don't get a job within 3 weeks of finishing school don't think you're living here".

So it took me about 6 weeks to get a job and he rode me like a mule the whole time. As soon as I could I got out of there. I ended doing an apprenticeship (which I hated) but I really wanted to go to Uni. 

People with supportive parents are truly blessed.

I’ve always had the gauntlet 😆 (as far as I’m concerned I’m still homeschooling my daughter even though she decided to go to school as I’m treating it like an activity she can stop whenever) and yeh can’t see that changing any time soon 😆

I didn’t realise schools followed up what students were doing 🤨 think mine lost track of me which is just how I like it 🤣
