There are several stages of knowing and learning.   It is a psychology concept that is  associated with the acquiring of knowledge, education and awareness.    It is one that fits perfectly with adults and children as they travel on the journey of life.  

This is the what takes place in education.  Children come to school with a blank slate.   *You don't know what you don't know* is the first stage of learning.  They will have a readiness already equipped with the basics of literacy and numeracy thanks to their parents.  In grade one the eager little  children are taught the curriculum for the year and developing a conscious knowing for that specific content.   Then in each succeeding grade students are presented with a more complex level of knowledge content.  At the start of each year they enter successive classrooms not knowing what they don't know until they have acquired the knowledge and learning set out by the educations system.  

On the education journey each child individually progress into different stages of knowing.  The second stage of learning is when children become aware of what they need to know.   It is *you don't know what you know* phase.  This is the moment when children are motivated to learn, they learn the skills of thinking, questioning, problem-solving and self-appraisal.  Each child is individual in learning, some of course will be far ahead, most will be on the middle road while some will be sitting at the lower end of achievement.  

The third learning stage is the *you know what you don't know.*   Kids are really firing ahead wanting to know more and more.  There is so much to learn, a vast amount of changing knowledge is constantly occurring.  Desire, determination and drive are important.

The last and fourth stage is *knowing what you know.*   When it is the end of a school year and it means sitting for exams this is an apt phase to be in to gain good marks.  However, once that young people are at university, in a trade or a new job are they  back to the first stage of *you don't know what you don't know?*  

I am thinking so.  These stages of learning are constantly moving, like revolving doors.   It is not meant to stop because there is always more to know.  If our kids learn this they are set for a fun life journey or maybe not depending on whether the want to learn is there.  Always a choice!
