##
What is Modern Art? (2/2)

## Movements: Expressionism
-------
Before WWI, experimental practices began with German and Austrian painters .Eventually they became known as Expressionists, adopting unprecedented characteristics of other art movements previously. Post-Impressionist, and Fauvist works are strong influences on this genre. Artificial and bright colors usually represent this genre.

## Movements: Cubism
-------

One of my all-time favorite genres is Cubism. This was the marked shift toward abstraction in modern art. In 1907, Braque and Picasso began making crazy, bending, topsy-turvy, weird perspective and dimensional sculpture, and odd collages. Cubism emphasized subjectivity in the approach. Picasso wanted to express what was inside of him. "When we discovered Cubism, we did not have the aim of discovering Cubism. We only wanted to express what was in us." Also notable for creating statements, Picasso was a revolutionary.

## Movements: Surrealism
-------

Dali! Dali! In the 1920's Salvado Dalí, Max Ernst, Man Ray, Joan Miró, and Yves Tanguy founded Surrealism together. Surrealism is rooted in subconscious thought, often images convey ideas that you could only see in your dreams. No control exercised by reason, except for moral or aesthetic concern. If you want to visualize imagination, this is the genre to see.

## Movements: Abstract Expressionism
-------

In the mid-20th century, a group of artists forewent figurative styles for an abstract aesthetic. These painters place emphasis on modernist colors, composition, and emotion, but also on creative process. Often artists would paint with tubes of paint vs brushed, or sprayed paint. Jackson Pollock definitely is a strong character in this genre.

What comes next? Pop Art is the first genre of Contemporary Art. And that's what comes after Abstract Expressionism.

### Steemians, more to be continued tomorrow. What do you think of this thus far?
