Space - General information for learners

I am sure you have looked up at the sky and have seen the sun, the moon and the stars. To think their is a whole solar system away from earth where there are planets and meteors and stars.

We will first have a look at a few general facts on space and then we will carry on with information on different parts of space as a lesson every day.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Td_A9H69eE8

source

If you look at the Sun (and do not ever look directly at the Sun because you will hurt your eyes) it looks like it is not very big, maybe even smaller than Earth? It only looks that way because the Sun is so far away from Earth and it is actually 300 000 times bigger than Earth.

In space you will find many comets, not all always visible from Earth. One of them which are only visible every 75 years is 'Haley's comet'. It was last seen from earth in 1986 and will only be spotted again in 2060...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PRjV8MkFhIA

source

There are 7 planets orbiting the sun (can you name them all?) and the hottest one is Venus. The temperature there can be up to 450 degree celsius - you will be burned to a crisp.

Many scientists believe that an asteroid impact caused the extinction of the dinosaurs around 65 million years ago.

The solar system has been around for 4.6 billion years ago (just imagine what the solar system has been around for all those years.)

If you look at the Moon you will see a lot of dark spots on it. Those are the craters that formed and the Moon has a lot of craters and scars - Earth has less, the reason for that being that there is more activity on Earth where the surface changes because of things that happens like earthquakes and erosion, wind and rain which does not happen on the Moon. The footprints and the tire marks left their by the astronauts that went to the moon will stay there forever, because their is no wind.

Saturn is the planet with the most beautiful rings around it, the rings can be seen easily, but Jupiter, Uranus and Pluto also have rings, they are just not as obvious.

Have you forgotten which planets orbits around the Sun? Have a look at the video.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ASQkz4XaphU

source

Do you want to weigh less? Go to Mars. The gravitation is less there and you will weigh less than on Earth.

Our mass is the amount of matter that we consist of. This mass does not change when we change planets. However, if we went from Earth to Mars, our weight would change because Mars has less gravity than Earth. Gravity is a force pulling matter together.

All the planets rotates in the same way that Earth does, but one of the planets spins on its side like a barrel. This is Uranus.

Meteoroids move very fast and they can travel as fast as 42 km per second. They can have a huge impact if they slam into something like a planet or other pieces in the solar system. There is a difference between meteoroids and comets. You can read more about it here.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dvd47rMYia0

source

The first man made object sent into space was in 1957 when the Russian satellite named Sputnik was launched.

The oceans have high and low tides and this all happens because the Sun and Earth. You can read more about it here.
