Spiders - Information and a story for kids

Most people are very scared of these 'creepy crawlies' with the 8 legs. Most people will kill them if they find them in their houses, but even if they are scary and not so pretty, you do not have to fear the. Most of them will run away if you come closer and only some are poisonous to humans. They are also helpful with catching those irritating insects like mosquitoes and flies.

There is a beautiful movie (and a book) called 'Charlotte's web' on the live of a spider and other animals on the farm. If you want to watch the movie you can do it here.

Lets learn a bit more about spiders.

The first mistake that a lot of people make is they think a spider is an insect. The spider belongs to the Arachnid family along with mites, fleas and scorpions. They have 8 legs, unlike the 6 legs of insects. They also do not have antennae on their heads, while insects do.

You will find spiders all over the world, but not in Antarctica (not many animals have adapted to live in that cold) and if you do not like spiders you will freak out to know that there are more that 40 000 types of spiders...

Find pictures and at least two facts on a few types of spiders.

Most spiders have opening on their abdomen (their back side) that are called spinnerets. This is used to make the silk with which many spiders will spin their webs. It is a true art if you sit and watch how a spider does that (without any hands). Different spiders spin different webs.

Find pictures of some interesting webs spun by spiders.

Smooth as Silk. All spiders produce silk but not all spiders spin webs. Silk is used for climbing, to create webs, to build smooth walls in burrows, build egg sacs, and wrap prey. ... Most spiders have four or more openings, or glands, on their abdomen called spinnerets.

You can read more about it here.

source

Most spiders can not harm humans and their venom is just strong enough for the insects or small animals they catch, but there are a few spiders like for instance the black widow that can be harmful to humans. Not a lot of people die from spider bites, but they can get sick with nasty infections.

Do research and find out which spiders are harmful to humans and where they are found.

Many people have a huge fear of spiders, some so bad, they will not even be able to watch these videos. That is called 'arachnophobia'.

Most spiders catches insects but some are large enough to hunt bigger prey.

Tarantulas are large and often hairy spiders, the biggest species have been known to kill mice, lizards and birds.

Most tarantula species pose no threat to humans.

Watch the video and listen to the story carefully. Once you are done, re-tell the story or write a few sentences on it.
