The submarine has a huge crew to check that everything is running smoothly. In a big submarine, there can even be more than 100 men or women that is part of the crew.

Submarines are used by the military as part of navy forces, protecting aircraft carriers, performing reconnaissance and carrying out other tasks.

Sometimes people even use submarines to do research under the sea or to find wrecks of old ships. The submarine can stay under water for months at a time. The main reason why it will surface is to change crew or to restock the food and supplies for the crew.

A submarine has raised part and here you will find the telescope through which the crew can have a look to see what is going on above the water. You will also find the radar here. In order for a submarine to go under water, the ballast tanks will be filled with water.

In the 1600's people developed 'submersibles' - these were almost like a submarine, but the min difference was it could not stay under water for a long time by itself without a pipe that let in oxygen. It can also not generate its own power. Only in 1776 the first submarine was invented.

The term submersible is often used to differentiate from other underwater vehicles known as submarines, in that a submarine is a fully autonomous craft, capable of renewing its own power and breathing air, whereas a submersible is usually supported by a surface vessel

The first submarine not propelled by human power was the French vessel named ‘Plongeur’. Launched in 1863, it used compressed air for propulsion.

In the 1800's they started adding torpedoes to the submarine that could be used in warfare.

Jules Verne wrote a book in 1870 called '20 000 Leagues under the sea'. This was a science fiction story, but it made a lot of people aware of what submarines could do and more people became interested in this.

Submarines were used during both world wars and the Germans were very successful with blocking the supply lines to the UK with their submarines which they called 'U-boats'.

The first nuclear powered submarine was launched in 1954 and this meant that not only did the submarine move faster, it also had a much longer life expectancy before its power ran out.
