The Moon - Information for learners

What is the one thing that you cannot miss most of the nights up in the sky? Yes, the Moon. Sometimes we see the whole moon and sometimes just a part of it - this is not because the moon gets smaller and bigger, it is because of the Sun only lights up a certain part of the moon.

The part that is lit up by the Sun, is the part that you see 'shining' at night. If it is not for the Sun lighting up the Moon, we will not be able to see it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NCweccNOaqo

source

Moons are space bodies that orbits around planets - the earth only has one moon but many of the other planets have more. You can read more here on the different moons.

The average distance from the Moon to the Earth is 384403 kilometres

The Moon orbits around the Earth and it takes the Moon 27.3 days to complete one full circle. So you will see a full moon once every month. It does happen that we see a full moon twice in some months and that we call a 'blue moon'. This is where the expression 'Once in a blue moon...' come from, meaning that something does not happen that often.

There are mountains and craters on the Moon and the tallest mountain is half the height of Mt Everest on Earth. It is 4700 meters tall.

You will weigh much less on the Moon. The reason for this is that the gravity is not as strong as on Earth - in fact, it is only a fifth as strong. It is much easier to jump very high on the Moon.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JM21GBJecx0

source

In 1966 Russia send it first spacecraft to the moon, but it did not have people in it. In 1969 America send the first people to the moon.

The first person to set foot on the Moon was Neil Armstrong.

The moon has many craters on it because of meteors that crashes into it. Their is no atmosphere or wind or weather on the moon and because of that, the holes just stays there. If you leave a footprint there, a wind will not blow the sand and cover it up after a while.

During the day the moon becomes very hot and at night it turns very cold.

The Moon is very hot during the day but very cold at night. The average surface temperature of the Moon is 107 degrees Celsius during the day and -153 degrees Celsius at night.

Because of the influence that the 'gravitational pull' from the Moon has on Earth, that it stays on the same path and orbits Earth, it influences high and low tide of the oceans.

The Moon orbits Earth and the both orbit the Sun. It happens sometimes that the Earth is between the Sun and the Moon and this is called a lunar eclipse. You can read more about it here.

Watch the video on information on the first moon landing where people stepped onto the moon. Can you imagine how excited they must have been and just think of the view they had.
