Tips to survive an emergency

We so easily use the words "It is an Emergency" when we cannot find something or we want someone to phone us back and in our minds it can be urgent and we want to resolve it quickly, but having a real 'Medical emergency' is something very different.

Lets get a few pointers on what you need to do 'in case of an Emergency'.

Accidents can happen fast and at any time and to anybody. You can be with a friend, your family or even alone, but the most important thing to remember is to try and stay calm.

This can be difficult, because you can be scared or alone, but it is very important when an emergency happens that you take a deep breath and try and keep yourself calm until help arrives. After that you can 'fall apart' and cry, but before help arrives, your friend or family member is depending on you to get help for them.

If there is no one around or you are alone at home, make sure you either call the emergency number or an adult that can help. Take a deep breath once again and calmly explain what the emergency is. It is not going to help if you scream and shout, the person on the other end of the phone will not be able to understand you and it will waste time to let them know what is going on.

If you phone the emergency number, make sure you give your name and address and stay on the line until the operator says you can hang up. They can ask you to do certain things to help the victim.

Do not move a person who is unconscious, they could have hurt their neck or back and moving them could make it worse, so rather just sit with them and wait for the emergency team or an adult to arrive.

If a person is not breathing, you need to inform the operator, that they can instruct you what to do.

All of this can be very scary, but you need to tell yourself the whole time 'Stay calm, stay calm', because that can save a life.

The following video shows 'Basic first aid procedures' which is very good to know if you ever need it - watch it and you can even practice it, you never know when you will need it.

Nobody wants to think of accidents every time they leave the house, or that something bad can happen, but it is always good to be prepared, just for in case you will have to react fast.

Ways in which you can be prepared is

know the emergency number

know basic first aid

know your parents' or another adult's number

have a way in which you will be able to keep yourself calm, may it be talking to yourself, taking a deep breath or singing - no matter what you do, as long as you can stay calm, you will be able to help.

Never think that because you are a kid, you are not able to help someone in case of an emergency. Just like an accident can happen even if you are careful, a kid can help save a life if they are calm and brave and do the right thing.
