73 Rep & 12,000 followers and Why it means nothing

<div class=text-justify>Some people think Reputation and followers are King when we speak about metrics to meassure how *succesful* our journey on the Steem Ecosystem has been.<hr>

Hell, I´ve even made some achievement/milestone posts *braggin* about how I reached certain followers, reputation or something similar and there´s nothing wrong with that, after all, in one of my [posts from September 2017](https://steemit.com/writing/@anomadsoul/learning-to-recognize-a-victory-let-s-not-be-so-hard-on-ourselves) I talk about the importance of celebrating things like this. After all, it´s not easy to reach certain reputation or certain number of followers and we should be proud of our little achievements.</div>

But don´t be fooled, follower/reputation milestones, while they may be a positive thing to see in our Steem profile, they mean nothing if we are not community focused and mantain certain quality level in our posts, if we don´t strive to be the [Best version of yourself that you can be](https://steemit.com/writing/@anomadsoul/learning-to-recognize-a-victory-let-s-not-be-so-hard-on-ourselves). In that link I include, I talk about how the only person we should be comparing ourselves, is our self the day before.

I don´t care if other people uses bidbots to increase its reputation or if some other dudes grow their follower base faster than me. What matters is that I focus in being the best Steemians I can be and, let´s be honest, that has nothing to do with followers or reputation; I know Steemians with Rep 58 that care more about the platform than some users with a 70 rep. 

The truth is, yout post rewards, the ammount of comments you get, the meaningful relations you build here, have little to nothing to do with your reputation or amount of followers.

What I can advice you is, celebrate your milestones, but don´t think for a second that these numbers will provide you the *success* (whatever that may be for you) we´re all looking for.

Engage with other people, leave meaningful comments, participate in discord/steem.chat group chats, get involved in a community you find interesting, but most importantly, be the best version of a Steemian you can be.

Well I could not agree more!
Rep can be bought and a lot of followers are just dead account or resteem services!
My posting values did increase but I would preferred that also the number o comments would have increased with the same %, which did not happen!

Oh man those resteem services... they are just worhtless because most of the people following those accounts don´t engage or vote or are bots :/

Getting a lot of comments always brings us up, I know I should answer more of the comments I get and I´m doing that exactly, been replying to comments for two hours now haha. Thanks for the comment man!

I try to write one or post per day, and a few times during the day I do browse my feed and try to comment as much as possible!
Not only because people stay motivated by genuine comments but also because it could help them when steem-ua or actifit drops by! Both do have an algorithm in which the engagement on a post is important!

Neither here nor in any social network. While it might land you some gigs (music industry wise), follower quantity and in this case, reputation can easily be gamed. 

After Steemfest³ I see all this from a different perspective. **Making friends is the ultimate goal**, while at the same time, making myself a better me, every day with each interaction or publication (totally agree on everything you said).

Well congratulations anyway!

Most 1st gen accounts with >12K followers are from back in the day when there were more active users and I think most of them are dead followers (many of mine too of course).

I've noticed most steemians my gen (2nd gen) are stuck around the 1-2K follower mark....

As to rep... same level of meaninglessness! However I quite enjoy watching mine tick upwards for some reason. 

I guess we just need another front end that displays alternative metrics. If any at all?!? 

I agree that chasing numbers is a silly approach to any endeavor... better to act with integrity!

I think there´s a webpage to see dead followers, it would be cool to find out the number of dead followers I have.

Yeah, second and third generation have very few people with 4k+, weirdly my followers exploded in January 2018 when I got my delegation, I wonder why xD

Yeah of course we like seeing our rep go up, I do, but ultimately that´s for our ego cause it doesn´t help on anything haha.

Just yesterday I told @tarazkp that at times am jealous of comments some bigger users are getting. I know that you guys have earned it. And that you deserve more than you are getting.  To be there where I want to be and to reach the stars that I desire to reach I just have to keep upping my game.
Weirdly enough I don't think that I would want to have thousands of followers.  That would just make  me wonder how many of them are still here and alive.  

I don't make posts about getting x reputation or a followers. But in december I will be making a post celebrating my 1 year anniversary. I think that is a meaningful milestone. So I will not congratulate you for having a new reputation level or a follower count. Instead I congratulate you for having memories and life experiences that are connected to steemit.

considering that there are large pools of auto follower accounts, it isn't unexpected. THere are users here with 30 or 40 accounts that are laying dormant for various reasons, others part of stupid little curation scams, others that made accounts, fooled people and then forgot about them as well as the y couple dozen who lose their keys every day. The real number of users is hard to gauge but it isn't high.

I agree with you. I am looking forward though to have this magic 7 in front of my Rep though. 

But even my Rep is increasing and I have more followers like half a year ago, the engagment on my posts is lower than ever. 

Mostly that is my fault as I dont engage myself this much atm, as well I think through the low prices people are not as motivated as they were before when crypto went crazy.

In poker you focus on playing well and dont bother with the results as even if you loose the hand you will make your gains in the long run. The same is true for Steem as long as you work for your success you will be rewarded, it might take some time but your work will catch up with your results.

I remember the one that costed me the most I think was 66, i hit a dry streak and it took me a looong time haha.

Yep, engagement is lowering and especially now since only the true believers are the only ones engaging now.

Well low engagment makes it easy to make new friends since there is less noise.

I am currently in a dry streak I feel but like I mentioned could be my own fault as well.

Numbers, numbers... Sometimes they are so pointless.

I agree with you totally, especially that part where you said that you know 58 Rep Steemians who do more for STEEM than some of 70 Rep. I believe that you need to reach a certain amount of Rep/followers/SP to be recognized by the community more. But I understand why is that and I'm really glad there are people who don't care that much about numbers here but what's behind them.

Sadly I agree followers and rep don't mean much anymore. There was a new cool website that gave you real follower stats, sorry can't remember the name, it stopped working during last hard fork and then I forgot to check again. Personally I recently unfollowed 300 users and removed witnesses. It's too easy to follow/vote and then totally forget why... when I find time I'll try to catch up on that, but most of the info I find is old.  
As far as being ones best self, I think in some cases it may mean using less Steemit, after all, social media can be addicting and have negative effect on productivity. I guess it all depends on the goals we set for ourselves :)

Oh, knowing the website´s name would kick ass, now you made me curious! Exactly, I continuosly "purge" my following base exactly because of the reasons you cite here. It would be cool to know what people that you follow are already dead accounts. I know! Steemit can become pretty adictive if we are not careful, I have experienced withrawal syndrome quite some times when i don´t have data for hours at a time haha.

I surely know the number of followers doesn't mean nothing here because that doesn't translate necessarily in the support they could bring to my posts. They "follow" me but in the majority of my posts (I think they are not that bad) they never came to support. I'm guilty of that too because I don't read and upvote for every user I follow.

@anomadsoul you are absolutely right man! When I joined steemit (15th aug, 2k18) I didnt know what to do, how to do and how to gain. I make different tricks, follows some tips from others posts but nothing actually works... In my first days I also used a lot of bid bots but onr day I understand they dont matter at all. 
**Make more friends.... More and more!**
Yea, I think is this the only way to grow together in this platform... Community and friends... No matter if you are not a very good writter.. Just Take this as a social network like instagram or twitter and do what you do in there..
I make generally photograohy blogs, but  am not a great photographer ... But I am alive, sound and actively posting 1 blog daily into steemit. All thanks goes to my friends as without them, i am nothing in here....

I agree my friend. I have over 1400 followers and 61 reputation score in just 10 months but, it doesn't matter much as I think most of my followers are bots or these accounts are dormant.
 However, this platform is a great place for interacting people all around the world. Here I learnt so many things here  and gained knowledge which were not available anywhere else.

i totally get what you say and agree! I just wanna highlight the reputation part a bit. Although it means nothing especially now with the bid-bots that you can can boost your post to the trending page and from 50 to immediately go to 65 rep, there is another case.

I do everything manually and never used bid-bots cause i don't agree. Thus my rep number, may be basically a number that doesn't equal success but for me in a way it does. It shows all my hard effort in here!

I have to agree with this as well.  My followers and reputation have grown pretty high, but the amount of engagement is still pretty low.  I have people that I comment on and they comment on my posts pretty regularly.  If you removed the votes I get from delegations and SBI shares though, my rewards would be pretty much nothing.

@anomadsoul me parece una muy necesaria reflexión instropectiva la que haces, cada logro, por banal que parezca es algo que debemos celebrar y disfrutar con alegría, forma parte de nuestra vida, de las cosas que nos hacen sentir vivos... en el aquí y el ahora. Por otro lado en un mundo, lamentablemente, plagado de egoismos, falcedades, "trampas" y demás especimenes, lo mejor que podemos hacer es mantenenos íntegros en cuanto a quienes somos, a lo que en esencia llevamos dentro, enteder, aceptar y honrar la misión que cumplimos en esta vida con mucho respeto y humildad, somos pasajeros en esta vida, si cada quien aporta lo mejor de si en lugar de envidiar lo que es de otro, el viaje se hará mas placentero y fructífero.

Buena reflexión y mas porque yo en lo personal lo hago para mi, es decir que planteo mis publicaciones no para ganar seguidores y votos altos, yo las hago únicamente para llenarme como persona, he conocido grandes personalidades (usuarios comunes muy especiales) en este medio, y planteo mis publicaciones como una forma de vida y mostrar lo mejor de mi y lo que mas anhelo conseguir que es conocer mas y mas personas con pensamientos distintos y culturas diferentes y así que desde que estoy en steemit me he dedicado a viajar y conocer y aunque tengo unos cuantos cientos de seguidores valoro mas aun el comentarios de unos pocos que son quienes realmente me ven... Thats so very true, you can pay for bots to up your rep so rep doesnt always reflect how great you are.  As to followers, even with your 12k followers, how many actually interact with you.  Quality definitely trumps quantity here.

Sure, its a way of boosting your ego but it doesn´t effect your the "success" we might have in the platform.

You are absolutely right! My reputation and followers count does not indicate a success level for me. The only milestone I want to celebrate is still being on the Steem journey with the friends I've made along the way. Yep.

Although, some of these silent curation accounts, 'ripperone', 'alexis555', 'mangos', etc, do seem to vote more often on higher reps.

And follower SP is used by busy to calculate their vote.

But yeah, mostly useless!

Amen to that @honeydue, @anomadsoul is the most community orientated Steemian I'm aware off. And I think he just proved it again during Steemfest (although he doesn't have to prove it anymore I think). So congratulations indeed with the rep you got. 🎉

I think those numbers are different for everyone. I do care more about my followers number (although I know that not many would read my posts 🤣) than my reputation number. Since I joined the @travelfeed team I still see a nice (small) growth in that number. Can't wait till I reach the 1000 followers 🧐

Ciertamente como expresas en tu articulo los números de seguidores o reputación no son la muestra del éxito, pero si puede servir como herramienta para medir nuestro avance en steemit, claro esta que sin ofender a nadie en ocasiones me he topado con usuarios que tienen + 70 reputacion y sus publicaciones no dejan mucha enseñanza por así decirlo.

Por otro lado me he topado con usuarios de reputación 30 que sus post, no solo son de provecho para otros usuarios sino que ademas el diseño y empeño que le dan es excelente, lastimosamente bajo mi criterio, muchas veces talentos como ese no son tomados en cuenta, porque muchos solo se dedican a leer y apoyar a los "Exitosos" esto no es malo como tu mismo dijiste. Se vuelve malo es en el momento donde dejamos de valorar la calidad.

Se que soy un usuario novato, pero con ganas de aprender, mejorar  para  poder compartir contenido de calidad y provecho para otros usuarios, de esa forma estoy seguro que algún día conseguir verdaderos seguidores ¿Por que les digo verdaderos seguidores? Porque en mi perfil me salen 229 seguidores, pero cada articulo que realizo tiene un promedio de 30 votos jajaja, claro esto hasta los más grande les pasa, pueden tener más de 5000 seguidores pero les aseguro que solo el 10% son verdaderos seguidores.

That's the damn true. But you know, for a little steemian this will always be a dream until they realize the reality. And at least in my opinion - seeing that number of followers means how many people are interested in my content and how many people like what I'm doing, which is amazing, but again not the best thing that can happen on here :)

Just kidding, I agree with you, I have a little more than 1,000 followers and most of them are inactive or following more than 10,000 people...

I'm focusing on increasing my SP, I've managed to reach Minnow III recently and I'm starting to see a little snowball effect. I have almost 580 SP.
