<sup>
Cherine looked a bit annoyed, but Dommi put her hand on hers, stopping her from talking. “It is because she is a child?”
“Yes.”
</sup>

993

“I would like to think about it, Cherine just drop it. I will discuss it with Robert later. Roberto, I understand your need to provide for us and it makes all of us proud to know that our husband pays for everything. What I do not understand is why you do not accept help for those expenses that are not ours. Those expenses are too much for you to pay on your own and it is stupid, neither my father nor Alki would even notice that kind of expense. I bet they would also find a way to enter it as a business expense and get back a large part of it from the taxman.”

Of course I just had to comment on what she said, “I think you are one of the most honest women I have ever met Dommi. It amuses me how even people who are very honest and straight in their dealings, do not see anything wrong in using every trick they can think of to reduce their taxes. It seems everybody feels that banks, insurance companies and the taxman are all fair game - and we should get back out of them whatever we can if the opportunity arises.”

“I feel that way too. The taxman collects our money for the government to spend. Do they spend it wisely, always trying to ensure it is spent in the best interest of the people? You know they do not. They waste huge amounts, either out of incompetence, stupidity or else to fill their own pockets - and usually for all three reasons.

As for banks and insurance companies; they have reached the point where they control the economy of every single country. How can service companies suddenly grow so large if they are not cheating us? Where do they find the funds for making such huge loans? Did you know that the amount they can loan is no longer tied to the amount deposited by their customers? They treat all loans as just computer entries which don’t have to be backed by real money, earning them billions

They find every possible excuse to charge us for everything they can, but never give us back anything in return. For instance, have you tried to run a savings account? In the old days you would earn interest, with your savings growing slightly each year. Now, they deduct bank charges so that your savings decrease each year!

They play with their accounting, everything nice and legal, to make it look as if they are just about making a small profit. We all know it is bullshit. They are playing games, investing their profits and then use their apparent lack of profits to charge us another fee for some service they claim they give us - which by the way are already part of the cost of running their business. They are trying to make it that every single expense they have is charged as a fee, then all their profit is used for paying huge salaries to their executives and hidden in new investments. What is even worse is that the governments turn a blind eye to all they do which is not strictly legal, for they worry that hurting a bank could result in hurting their economy - at least that is the excuse they use. Do not even get me started on this Robert.”

“I’m glad to hear you have not even started discussing your feelings about this Dommi.” I grinned. “I have never been a businessman and so know very little about this subject.”

“You are giving the same excuse all the public, from government ministers down to street cleaners, use, thus silently giving consent to them taking over the world. When governments borrow huge amounts from private banks, amounts that they cannot pay back, then they are in effect giving those institutions the power of the aristocracy, as it used to be in the old days.”

994

I suddenly clicked. “Dommi love, is that why you have been posting messages at some controversial websites and newspaper sites? I’m not going to ask you to stop, but we cannot afford to draw the attention of government security agencies, so please let me teach you how to do so safely, in a way that will make it more difficult for them to know who you are.”

She slightly blushed. “I hope I can learn. Robert, what about the Cherinian expenses…?”

“You are right, I think I will have to ask the others to help out - I have been sitting here juggling my accounts, but they do not want to co-operate with me.”

“Would you mind if I talk to Alki?”

“Claudia, I think Alki is already scared of you.”

“Please do not tease me Robert. I will not speak to him as I am. I will go as an adult so that he takes me seriously.”

“What are you thinking of saying?”

“Don’t do that Robert. Either you trust me to handle it or you don’t. Do not ask me to first give you all the details of what I will say.”

“You go ahead love. Just one condition - nothing for us. Only the Cherinian expenses.”

The look on her face was my reward, I did not even care if she did a good job or not, what I had done was show confidence in her and the boost to her self-esteem was worth it.

The two girls left and Dommi looked at me fondly. “It will also boost our little Cherine if she feels she is helping. Would you like a coffee?”

“I also need to get out a bit. Want to join me?”

We sat at our local coffee shop. She joined me in a greek coffee.

“Dommi, do you remember I came home one day and found you all practising. You were sitting on the bed but appearing all over the house.”

“That was fun.”

“Why have we never used it?”

“In what way?” She was genuinely puzzled.

“I can think of many ways. For instance, when I had to spend my time in the void, many times I wished to talk to you. I ended up using my slivers in you girls, but it would have been nicer to appear, sit in a chair and talk with you. Could the gift be used for that?”

“We did not try talking with the projections. I’ll see to it today.”

“Thanks. So, what do you really think of this idea of Cherine’s, would I be a bad example to her by using her to win money?”

“Yes.” She watched my face and laughed. “You really are a ninny sometimes. You worried she will use her gifts that way when she grows up?”

“In a way. I do not like her thinking she can…”

“Robert. You said Tasso was our General, Minister of Security. Can I also be a minister?

She confused me and not seeing what she wanted, I answered casually, “Of course, minister of what?”

“It does not matter. Since I am now a minister I am declaring a state of emergency. We are involved in a war and we will try to use all means of making the enemy pay for our expenses. I am instructing Cherine to assist the Treasury.”

995

“You are a funny girl. Whenever I start to think I know you - you come up with surprises. I’m sure you only do it to confuse me. I will agree on one condition. A quarter of what we earn from the casinos goes into helping families who are in desperate plight.”

She grinned. “Trying to salve your conscious?”

“Damn right. I saw the effect of us using the money we got from Petsas to help some of his victims. Apart from the way I felt, I saw how it affected all you girls. It was a good feeling wasn’t it?”

“It was, though I did not think it was necessary for you to match it with our money also. Robert, I had a talk with Natalie.”

“About?”

“She has decided she wants to have another baby. She says she loves Sam, but she wants to have a baby that will belong to her family.”

“I’m glad. She has really turned out to be a sweet and lovely woman.” Another Cherinian baby! Just the thought made me very happy.

“She has a problem though. She refuses to have a baby if Themi does not open up to her. She cannot say so as it would sound like blackmail…”

I was aghast. “She would rob him of the joy, she must not!”

“Then how can she get him to speak about his pain?”

“When Cherine said she was the only one that could do so, it sort of tied our hands. I know that after my last visit my mother tried. I suspect she went about it in the wrong way. Tell Natalie to follow her own heart.”

“That is a cop out!”

I laughed. “I am the Minister of Cop Outs! What did you expect? You cannot be expecting an answer to that statement Dommi - I gave you my reason why she must deal with it. You want my advice, all I can say is she must listen to her own heart, not try to wheedle it out of him. He knows all the mind games and would not respect that.”

She pulled a face. “You are becoming predictable.”

“That is good Dommi. If you know what are the beliefs of a person and they stand by what they believe in; that they do not alter their beliefs to suit themselves, then they do become predictable. You realise you have just handed me a weapon?” As usual she did not pick up that I was about to tease her.

“How?”

“If you ever do something you know I would not approve of, you can no longer claim to not have known how I would have felt about it.”

I sensed Claudia phoning. She went to the bedroom and came out wearing one of Dommi’s suits, her body age in the mid-twenties. She gave a nervous grin and jumped. I kept out of her mind, I knew she would let me see later if it was anything important.

I sat with the girls helping them to study for their exams. It was my good luck that they did not need me to explain anything, as I did not even understand much of what they had been taught that day. I cannot help wondering, if for every generation the lessons are more advanced, more complex, what kind of childhood is left for the children of the future?

Claudia appeared and soon as she saw us she gave an ebullient grin of triumph. She came to me at the dining table and put two cheques on the table.

“Alki has agreed to pay all the expenses. The one cheque is for what you have already paid. We had to guess so he made it for a hundred and fifty thousand. The other one is for expenses for this next month.”

“I did not expect the first cheque love, you have done very well. Thank you.”

996

At my praise I felt her spirits soar. I stood up and gathered this wonderful woman of my heart into my arms and kissed her. She clung to me and I was not surprised to feel the passion within her. I knew how a triumph can awaken such feelings. I also knew she wanted to make love to me as she was. I could not very well tell her to sit and study for her exam, it would have been too big an anti-climax. I took her hand and led her to our bedroom.

“Claudia, I want to make love to you, but I want one thing to be clear. This has nothing to do with the money you got for us. I felt your need and I responded to it, but I also just want to make love because you are my love and you look especially sexy and beautiful at this moment.”

“You think I look sexy in this suit?”

“No. The look in your eyes is. You will look a lot sexier out of that suit.”

“Robert?”

“No love. Not yet. I’m sorry.”

“But I want a baby.”

“Tell me which one of you does not. It seems that from the day you are born each one of you wants one. In your case I say no for a very important reason. I asked your sister not to, she is five years older than you. How do you think she will feel if I made you pregnant now?”

“I did not think of that. You mean I have to wait another year?”

I slowly undressed her, kissing her shoulders. As her breasts came into view I thought I could have sworn they had been larger last time I saw her as an adult. I realised she had indulged in some body sculpting, to make herself my ideal. I stood back a moment and then sat on the bed.

“Claudia, I do not have the excuse other parents have for not wanting their child to have a baby too soon. They will say that bringing up a baby is a huge commitment, that the child is not mature enough yet. With us your baby is likely to be born capable of looking after itself. Give your sister at least the year Claudia.”

She nodded in agreement.

“One thing more. I have said this before, but none of you listen to me. You have changed your body to suit my tastes, to be my ideal woman. I do not want that. It is the differences in all of you that I treasure.”

“You mean my breasts? I did not do it for you only. I did not like them myself. They feel much nicer this size. They felt awful and anyway, Dommi did not have a bra big enough. I think that if I had grown up like other girls I would have become used to them, but having them suddenly appear makes me feel how uncomfortable they are.”

“It is very strange, when I want to alter some feature of mine you all protest. Yet you think it is alright for you to do it.”

She answered with her typical forthrightness, “If you did not like your nose and wanted to change it, I would not want to stop you. If you are changing yourself for other people, to make yourself look more handsome so that they will think I love you because of that, then I do not like it. You are talking about our visit in Cyprus Robert, and I would still say no.”

She had not completed undressing herself, waiting for me. I decided that now was not the time for talking, I could feel my criticism had already had a slightly negative effect on her libido. I went to her and cupping her face I kissed her tenderly.

“My darling Swedish maiden, I love you so much. I wish I could have a copy of you at every age. If we keep on talking I am going to end up wasting it by wetting my pants, ideal or not, those are one hell of a sexy pair of tits. Let’s see what the rest looks like.”
