Life is short. Be a satisfied pig ?

<html>
<h2>Socrates said; "Better to be a dissatisfied human than a satisfied pig". &nbsp;<br>
Was he right?</h2>

<p><strong>&nbsp;All my life</strong> I feel like I have been the dissatisfied human while my brother, my sister and my circle of friends have been the satisfied pigs. I am not judging them or trying to say I am better than them, in fact actually the opposite. <br>
In many ways I am and have been rather envious of them. &nbsp;They do not seem to be bothered about the same things that bother me. Social equality, human equality, the crooked economy, the crooked political system and so on.</p>
<p><strong>My family and friends</strong> seem to ignore such things and simply go out and have a <em><strong>"good time"</strong></em>. <br>
They socialise, they dance, they laugh and go on holidays and get drunk. <br>
Just recently my brother went to Spain and rented a Villa with a bunch of his friends.. <br>
He put out some video clips on <strong>Fakebook</strong> and from my perspective they were enjoying life and having a<em> good time. </em><br>
<strong>So why I can't do that? </strong><br>
I don't mean that I don't ever enjoy life or that I am a depressive type person, because I do and I am not. <br>
I do have joyous moments and I do have my holidays. <br>
But my conscience bothers me. <br>
I get angry at the blatant corruption and inequalities of the world. <br>
A world I was born into but had no hand in creating. <br>
<br>
And so I go on protests, I write letters to the Government. I write to the newspapers and TV stations. As an artist I have created a lot of political art attacking the establishment and the crooked capitalist system. <br>

In the end I gave up doing this because it was me that got the attention but not my message. <br>
My art came to be seen as a form of entertainment rather than a protest. One project I got me me into trouble with the local council. My letters to the Govt got me a visit from the secret service warning me to stop, and I once spent the night in a police cell for hand-cuffing myself to my local church. It was being pulled down o make a car park. I am not particularly religious but the church was over 300 years old. I thought it was beautiful and had historical value. <br>
What meaning is a car park for a shopping centre? <br>

In my career in corporate culture I stood up to many a dictator type boss who were clearly bullying their employees. Often people were brought to tears and humiliated. I could not look away or put my head down and ignore what was happening right in front of my eyes. <br>
I protested and tried to support my fellow workers. The price of doing this, the price of having a bothersome conscience, was to either lose my job or having to resign to make a point. <br>
How stupid of me. I suffered for nothing when I could have been out <em>having a good time.</em>&nbsp;</p>
<p>It bothers me that I can't let go and just have fun and be a satisfied pig. &nbsp;I mean, life is so short.<br>
 A blink of an eye and then we are gone. &nbsp;<br>
So why not just ignore the problems of the world and have fun?&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Better to be a dissatisfied human than a satisfied pig. <br>
</strong>If Socrates were alive today I would ask him if he still believes this. For being a dissatisfied human being is a heavy burden to carry when we only a short life that in the end is meaningless anyway. &nbsp;<br>
Live drink an be merry for tomorrow we die - right?&nbsp;</p>
<p>&nbsp;If I had a time machine perhaps I would go back in time and say to all those people who were dissatisfied human beings who tried to change things for the better for the rest of us, <strong>not to bother. </strong>&nbsp;</p>

Perhaps the first person I would go back to meet would be the young internet fellow called Aaron Swartz. <br>
He was obviously a dissatisfied human whose conscience bothered him and so tried to do something to changes things for the rest of us. He was unfairly arrested and the poor guy killed himself. Clearly an injustice of gigantic proportions. <br>
If I could meet him before he did anything I would tell him to not bother, just go out and have a good time. <br>
Let the world go to hell. No one cares. <strong>Be a satisfied pig.&nbsp;</strong></p>

<p>&nbsp;Possibly the next on my list would be Fritz Gerlich. A journalist in 1930s Germany. He spent his entire career in opposition to Hitler. After a meeting with Hitler at his own home he quickly recognised that Hitler was a psychopath and then was motivated to try and stop the monster from destroying his country. He even lost his job and so started to his own newspaper just to oppose the Nazi regime. <img src="https://scontent-arn2-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/21371049_1724879461149204_4089483754595687410_n.jpg?oh=3979d0a7879db05e4ac2024ca248f48b&amp;oe=5A5F7EAA" width="737" height="446"/><br>
He failed miserably of course and when Hitler came to power he was one of the first to be arrested. He was tortured to death. But what if I went back to 1925 and met with the guy. I would tell him not to bother. Don't waste your time. No one cares.<strong> Be a satisfied pig. &nbsp;</strong></p>
<p>But then it occurred to me. I am only focusing on the ones that actually we know about. The ones whose names made history. What about all those unknown dissatisfied human beings who tied to change things for the rest of us and never became known. That number could be huge, I could I possibly trace them all?<br>
But wait a minute, Why am I even bothering to waste my time and go back in time to help them?<br>
That is not the philosophy of the satisfied pig.</p>
<h2>After going through all this hypothesis I finally came to three thoughts.</h2>
<p>1) I wonder what the world would be like if all the dissatisfied human beings never bothered or had never bothered to be bothered to try and fix a world that is so clearly broken? If they all decided or had decided, to become satisfied pigs? <br>
<br>
2) I wonder what the world would be like if all the satisfied pigs suddenly became dissatisfied human beings and suddenly started to try and fix a world that is so clearly broken? &nbsp;&nbsp;</p>
<p>3) And finally - Can if be, is it possible, that the reason satisfied pigs can live as satisfied pigs is because there are dissatisfied human beings out there who strive for a world where satisfied pigs can live?<br>

First off Thanks for sharing your life experience in detailed words. I read every single word and got emotional . I'm really very sorry for your internet friend who committed suicide in jail. I can imagine your thoughts towards life and I must say that still bother your life. Life is really too short. Don't try to do things in right way. At the end you will lost. Just enjoy your life as it is. And be a "SATISFIED PIG". Thanks for sharing great and real STUFF for Steemian Community, Much appreciated.

I know what you mean. I have had the same questions in my head until recently. I just realized that you cannot change the world. It will always be this way. I do not like it but that´s the way life is. We will always have an injust system but we can lead a good life still. Always living out our own potential and helping others to life theirs. I have been working with children and youth for the last 10 years and I realized: It is best to help individuals to grow. I see the progress, I grow myself and this way the world moves in a better direction.

On a second note: I think the best way to help is get very rich and build others up. :)

Well said, @arthuradamson.

I was never any good at being a Satisfied Pig, either... and usually got called a "killjoy" and "downer" for my inability to be one. 

I can't tell you why. Maybe it was being raised with Scandinavian social values... maybe it was the Sunday in boarding school in the UK where I happened to be sitting in the prefect's common room watching "Open University" for a couple of hours as some guy droned on about "Consequential Thinking" and it was the first time any kind of adult "teaching" truly reached me and made sense to me.

Then I spent the next 40 years learning how people (mostly) don't WANT to *"think"* they just want to *"do whatever they want"* and not have a care in the world as a result.

Maybe your point nr. 3 is the most relevant... Satisfied Pigs and Dissatisfied Humans live in some eternal dance of mutual enablement... without one, the other ceases to exist.

Good to know there are other "dissatisfied humans" out there. 
Yes indeed, I know the very type who want to "do whatever they want" - been surrounded by them all my life. My brother is one of them. Like is say, there is a tiny part of me that envies them but still I guess I woundnt change the way I am if I could. Cheers @denmark guy
