Ragtag Garden, Part 10

Something has been munching on my cabbage and was moving into my brussels sprouts.

There wasn't any obvious evidence of what it was, at least in the daytime. No eggs on the underside of leaves, no shiny slime trails, no nuthin'... only the ever-more raggedy leaves were proof something was feasting when I wasn't looking. So Friday night, I went out with my flashlight to see if I could figure out what attacking.

That did the trick. I discovered it was massive numbers of earwigs. A little bit of research confirmed the fact that I'd built the little darlings a 5-star spa with the mulch and provided a buffet with the veggie buckets. The recent rain boosted their gathering in the damp, dark area in and under the mulch.

The cabbage was the main draw, but the sprouts were a heavy favorite, coming in second. Thankfully, they haven't been into the peas or beans much and have left the pepper, tomato and zucchini alone. Maybe they were saving them for later...

>
What is diatomaceous earth?

>Diatomaceous earth is made from the fossilized remains of tiny, aquatic organisms called diatoms. Their skeletons are made of a natural substance called silica. Over a long period of time, diatoms accumulated in the sediment of rivers, streams, lakes, and oceans. Today, silica deposits are mined from these areas.
>
How does it work?

>Diatomaceous earth is not poisonous; it does not have to be eaten in order to be effective. Diatomaceous earth causes insects to dry out and die by absorbing the oils and fats from the cuticle of the insect's exoskeleton. Its sharp edges are abrasive, speeding up the process. It remains effective as long as it is kept dry and undisturbed.
[source](http://npic.orst.edu/factsheets/degen.html)

Not having a mechanical duster, I improvised and used baggies. To apply the powder at the base of the containers, I clipped the corner off and used a clothespin to seal the hole so I could fill the bag. Basically, I used it like a cake decorating tool. Point 'n shoot! Worked liked a charm!

Next, as an overall treatment, I used another baggie that I'd poked holes in with a fork. I kept the holes more toward the bottom of the bag. In effect, it was a low-tech duster. I had a steady wind from the south, so when I shook the bag, the breeze did a wide, even distribution over the whole area. Looked like snow!

Even though the earwigs have left everything else alone, I included all the buckets and the bin in the treatment. I don't know that they'd migrate if I'd left them untreated, but I'm not taking that chance. Besides, who knows what else might decide to show up in the future.

This is the ounce of prevention to go with the pound of cure.

We did have rain most of last night and I was concerned it had washed away my efforts. This morning I was pleased to see most of the DE was still in place at ground level. The dusting on the leaves was diminished, but even some of that is left. I'll probably do another dusting tonight to replace what melted. Even so, the residue will have washed down to the soil level in the buckets for a little more protection.

I was just thinking that! By no means is this ragtag. by the way, this is the same reason I don't plant anything related to the cabbage family due to the cabbage loopers and the white little butterflies that love to lay their hungry caterpillars on themπŸ›

Thanks, that's so kind! Ragtag is because it's made out 'scraps' I rescued from the earlier firepit project and threw together. I didn't even intend to garden this year...Lol!

Funny how things conspire and you end up with an entirely new project when you weren't paying attention.

Welcome aboard and have a blast!

Your cabbage looks better than mine, damn rain. I have a similar bucket system going on. ![IMG_3901.JPG](https://steemitimages.com/DQmNM7NJ1Z4Czs1HN7aJ6rDtAUWLytTsAXrZHzDFrKvi35E/IMG_3901.JPG)
I buy my buckets at the local bakery for $1 each and drilled holes in the bottom. They work great.

Amen on the rain. It can take a break for a few days.

Love those buckets! Agree with @amberyooper on the efficiency aspect. They seem much better suited to container gardening. I like the set up you have, too. The blocks are a great idea for borders!

My buckets are a legacy from when hubby was a painter. Couldn't beat the prices....Lol!

Lol, yup and I agree!

I did notice that they were a little more hesitant to crawl up on the leaves after the treatment, so that might slow the damage some - they can't reach as much. Before I dusted they were swarming the edges of the leaves. If the damage stops or slows dramatically, I call it successful.

Oh, and fyi, that big bag was about $11. I barely used any - maybe 4 of the little scoops, total. It goes a long way!

I once tried my hand at growing my own food. I had red cabbage planted and it was growing so nice. And then one morning I woke up and I think it was caterpillars that had a feast that night. Big holes in my whole tiny crop. I was chrushed. I lost interest soon after that...buying it from the shop is so much easier. I have much respect for anyone that grows there own food. Nature can be so harsh!

It can be a challenge. I can imagine that was a huge disappointment and it's amazing what such small critters can accomplish in a short time.

I'm a bit more laid back because I didn't even intend to have a garden this year. It was sort of an afterthought and a spinoff of my earlier project, so any produce I get will be a bonus.

Diatomaceous earth is my go to solution for all kinds of bugs. I even rub the food grade kind in my cat's fur to kill fleas. I hope it keeps the critters at bay.

Thanks, hon! My first contact with it was in a pet food recipe for one of my clients. I'm finding out it's got way more uses than I imagined. Flea control for cats is awesome - since they don't react well to toxic versions.

Oh yeah. I sprinkle it along doorways to keep out ants. I've had it on my carpets for a week to take care of a flea infestation. Killed them all. It helped with roaches when we moved into a rental house infested with them. Some people even eat it as a dietary supplement (no thanks to that one.) I always have some on hand.

Great post! Love diatomaceous earth. It is such a versatile product! I just found your blog here on steemit and love it, but quick question, what is the main reason for growing in containers and not just in the soil? I always had some veggies/fruits/herbs growing in soil in Belgium and I'm on a mission to start growing my own food again here in the tropics! So just wondering if I should go for containers too?

Thanks! So glad you're enjoying it! Agreed on the D.E. as I'm finding out. I'll be keeping this stuff handy.

The short answer on the buckets is my husband was a painter years ago. We had as many buckets as we wanted for free. We started using them for gardening because there's virtually no weeding. (We're lazy gardeners.) Fast forward and that area got overgrown. I've just reclaimed it and 'rescued' the buckets in the process. I couldn't let a perfectly good opportunity pass by, so I stuck in some plants and this is the result. The links to both projects are at the end of the posts if you want to backtrack. It's been an adventure...

Containers are great for soil & weed control. Portability is nice if you need to avoid or chase sun/shade. Raised beds are good, too, and usually have higher production.

I'm sure there are vastly more experienced folks here who know your region well and can offer better tips than me. (I'm near Chicago!) That's one of the best things on Steemit - access to worldwide knowledge and years of collective practical advice.

Ohh never thought of it as weed control... very much an issue here! Most of the weeds are edible but they grow so fast that we simply can't keep up, especially during rainy season! Thanks for the update and I think you might have just convinced me to grow more in pots!
