Основные части — корневище, ствол и крона. Листья пластинчатые, с разветвленными жилками, посажены на крепкие стебельки. Красивая кора, буйное цветение, привлекательное для птиц. В средней полосе листва опадает на исходе осени, для экономии влаги в зимние холода. Весной растения пробуждаются и из них вновь рождаются свеженькие листики. Дерево отличается неприхотливостью. Любит свет. Растет медленно. Встречается и в городе. Относительно легко пересаживается и приспосабливается к различным видам почв. Может служить источником технического сырья. Некоторые части применяются в народной и традиционной медицине. Может отлично приспосабливаться к изменениям природных условий. Дерево легко отличить среди иных представителей лиственных.
