My family came to the United States in the 1840s fought in nearly every war (including me in Afghanistan), worked the land, built towns, and lived in the same area since settling there but I still felt out of place there.  I grew up on the shores of Lake Michigan Growing up in the United States I was constantly fascinated by American Indians, their traditions, and artifacts. Living in Wisconsin, my grandparents owned a cabin on a lake near a reservation where we would spend a lot of time in the summer. It was a wonderful childhood living there and I really love Wisconsin! One summer when I was a young boy my mom bought me an arrowhead necklace from the local gift shop near our cabin. Later that week I was approached by a group of American Indian kids who politely told me that I had no right to wear it and I should take it off. In my mind they were correct, in fact, I was not even aware of my own ancestral past. I felt horrible for upsetting them. Now, I know how silly that was. As if my ancestors did not have arrowheads? Yes, I see why they would seem upset, being in their homelands, but today I feel I have more in common with those American Indians than ever before. You see I live in Germany now, the home of **my** ancestors. A few weeks ago while visiting the city hall there was a display case on a wall. Inside that display case were arrowheads, spearheads, hammerheads, etc. and for the first time in my life, I was looking at artifacts of my own people. These artifacts were discovered literally footsteps from the house where we now live. I was in awe. It was a moving and powerful experience.  You feel it in the woods here, in the land of the Ravens this ancient land. It's a powerful thing living in your ancestral home and it's a fulfilling thing.  On Thursday I took the children into the woods. It was a warm day, there was a slight breeze, and the air smelt sweet. We were alone with nature so I stopped with the children and I asked my three year old son to sit and listen for a second. I said ”Henry, shhhh listen to the wind. Can you tell me what is it saying to you?” He was serious for a moment, looked around, then put his hand to his ear and yelled ”Hello!” and we both started laughing so hard.  I never felt like I belonged growing up. I never fit in. Even living in such a great place, I always knew I would have to leave. Here there is a strong grounding feeling of warmth and welcoming. When I was first married to my wife we used to visit Germany and I would hate to leave, it physically hurt. Now I am lucky enough to say that I get to stay. I will also add that we were Catholics in a Protestant community and we're always reminded of that so maybe that didn't help either. That would be something to hear about, your great grandmother meeting Indians on her farm! wow. Nice share. I can relate to the whole being one with the land thing. I don't have that feeling in Australia where I was born. I never understood what a lot of indigenous people were on about until I lived in a forest squat south of London for eight months. I felt a connection with the land I had never felt before. We all built our own basic structures, dug wells and started doing basic permaculture and gardening (as well as dumpster diving) as an eco-village. I also feel this connection with the alps in France and with many places with mountains in general. There aren't so many mountains (well not so tall ones) in Australia. Wish you well! Monty

It's very strange but very magical too. We are so far removed from the greatness we once were yet still life offers us subtle reminders of what we can be. You just have to pay attention. "It may even call you home." I love that line. I've been to places that felt like they were calling me home, or that simply felt like home. I don't know much about my own heritage, but I know that I felt at home when I visited New Mexico, and again in the mountains of Austria, and most recently in Belgium. I too grew up on the shores of Lake Michigan. It was a place that never felt remotely like home to me. I completely agree with you in that we should all take the time to discover where our people come from and then to go there. I am still exploring the places that are calling me home.

I had no idea either until my wife bought me a dna test for my 30th birthday. I was so surprised when it came back 99.9% Northern European. I always though I was part Mexican but Guess not. It’s really wonderful to live in a time where we are able to do all these things, like research our past and travel to distant lands. Amazing!
