Cursed is one of the many new Netflix Originals that have been hitting the streaming platform as it starts to lose old IP that have been reclaimed by publishing powerhouses like Disney. In many ways, it is a blessing in disguise, as it allows Netflix to really take some creative risks and to create new IP rather than relying on old reruns of 80s and 90s sitcoms. 

However, like all creative ventures, it is a risky business... with rare hits like The Witcher being juxtaposed against countless less successful attempts. As a musician and creative artist myself, I value more highly the attempt to create some new... rather than the paint by numbers approach that other publishers do that will be a design by committee approach to maximise revenue over creative and artistic aspects. 

Cursed is a retelling and recasting of the King Arthur story. Set in the days BEFORE the traditional story, it focuses upon the life and adventures of the Nimue (known as the Lady of the Lake in the traditional storyline). It is actually a great retelling of a famous story, with the familiar characters appearing in unexpected guises whilst approximating their roles in the traditional story. Everything is similar... but just so deliciously different!

First up, I must apologies for the "screenshots" (actual photos of the computer screen...) as Netflix wouldn't allow me to take proper computer based screenshots whilst the Netflix app was running... I guess it was an anti-piracy measure... but it was a little bit annoying!

In between scenes, you have some pretty unique "wipes" last a few seconds with each change. A very particular art style and direction that conveys some information... not just a scene change, but also sometimes some plot line as well. It does a great job of moving the viewer from one location to another... but also stylises some of the action in a way that doesn't require a lengthy battle scene.

Cursed features a morality tale in it's depiction of the war between the Fey and the Humans. It is an interesting overarching storyline, but at times it is a bit heavy handed. Especially in the first half of the series, where the moral choices of the characters seemed a bit one-dimensional... hug the puppy good, or kick the puppy evil sort of thing. At these times, it reminded one more of an after-school afternoon TV show for kids rather than an adult retelling of the King Arthur story. 

Also, the depiction of the Fey was a bit scattered at times. Some of the Fey appear to be almost human in every regard... whilst others appeared to embrace a more animal-like nature. However, those animal-like Fey tended to overplay the "weirdness" of the animal aspect... which often came across a bit too self-conscious and overacted?

Speaking of the awkward teenage feel of the series... there was the incredibly awkward romance between Nimue and Arthur. It's cute... but oh so cringy! Perhaps the series was meant for a teenage audience rather than an adult looking for the next Witcher replacement?

However, after the mid-point of the season.... after the awkward "character" introductions and settings, the real story starts to kick in... and it is really quite a fun romp! With more than a few interesting twists to the traditional story! It ended all too soon, with a long-awaited character reveal.... however, we are still missing one further major character from the original story, and I can't wait till the second Season for that big reveal!

So, in the end... an interesting twist on the King Arthur storyline, with a definite emphasis on the coming-of-age of a young and powerful sorceress. A touch slow and awkward in the beginning half of the series, but the stage is set for a pretty powerful second Season! I can definitely recommend it!
