LEGO rebuilding....

LEGO... simultaneously the best thing ever for a parent.... and the bane of a parent's life. My children love LEGO... however, the oldest one really loves making the actual things that the instructions give. So, in this case a boat for her LEGO friends. It's great, we give her a new set of LEGO... and she is completely obsessed about it until it is finished! Which usually is about 2 hours at most... It is quite surprising how quickly they manage to get it all together... if only they managed to clean and tidy their rooms with the same laser sharp focus...  

Anyway, that obsession doesn't extend to creating new designs for herself (well, it is starting to... but she really still likes making the things that are described in the instructions). Which means, when things eventually get broken up, either by her friends or her little sister, she is desperate to try and rebuild the model in the exact way that it was described. As anyone knows, that is a right pain in the arse when all the pieces are scattered everywhere. 

However, to avoid tears and a completely down in the dumps kid... well, that is what a parent ends up doing... rounding up all the little bits and pieces that have been mixed up in the big LEGO box.... and then trying to help rebuild. Thankfully, this one is on the small side... there is a plane that will need to be rebuilt later...

So, here is the ever helpful instruction manual... well, it is helpful... aside from the fact that all the various pieces aren't all in the same easy to find packets anymore! ARRRRRGHGGHGHGHGHGHG!!!!!! Part of this can be sheeted home to a certain un-named other parent who cleans up with amazing gusto and energy... but dumps things in the box so that they fall apart.... sigh...

So, here is one of the boxes... I'm going to start here. It is October vacation after all, and it is a nice way to spend time with your kids... As you can see, there are various other LEGO Friends houses to be re-built as well... after the great Mum-Polcalypse (heh... LEGO movie reference?!?!??!!?) from earlier in the year! There is also a plane and that should be it. I'm going to try and make a little space where they can be played with and stay out of the way, perhaps somewhere high... or building out a ledge on her bed or something like that... 

...we'll just dump this out on the floor and start work... hopefully the wife won't notice?

Another lego parent, yay! And another veteran of stepping on an unseen lego and enduring the pain of what seems like 1000 needles stabbing the same spot at once, the struggle is real.

We have been a lego family for about 12 years @bengy. My 14 year old son(the gamer) still has most of the Legos he has ever bought/received and in the beginning he was exactly as you describe your daughter. Then as he got older and kept getting lego gifts it started to change, he would always build the model as it was intended but he also started to make up his own creations with the pieces of his older models that were long since destroyed. 
What always amazes me with his builds is the symmetry he achieves without written instructions. There have been times I've sat down with him and tried to build an original lego creation and while mine were always unique, they were also asymmetrical and "off".

Oh good, so it does come... and the slavish adherence to the instructions will pass! Thankfully, I'm not the one that steps on the pieces... it is always my wife! I'm not entirely sure why she doesn't manage to realise where she is walking.... 

I can't wait till she gets onto the ones with motors and stuff!

Lego! I love Lego, too. I even have two of the Mindstorm cpu's, and I used to coach a 'lego league' for robotics.

My biggest issue with Lego is stepping on one of those (&$%#^$ers in the middle of the night. %#$^@$% @#$^@@$&^ @$%@$#%.

I hope you're able to rebuild successfully! Finding those little pieces can be difficult. I applaud you as a parent!

Eventually the kids move on to something else, thank goodness. I sold hundreds of dollars of these things in a yard sale for maybe $10. I do not miss LEGO!  Good luck with the boat.

I was used to love Lego as well...just that I didn't have a full set (they are like Minecraft blocks...everything are in the same shape, except for some rectangles which could be used as connectors) and creativity was quite limited when I was still in love with them, lol. Now the closest thing from Lego that I still play is probably Minecraft (and other similar block building games), but I still somehow miss the feeling of building things with bare hands!

Digital blocks... I used to love LEGO (and still do...), but for some reason, I just didn't click with the digital blocks and MineCraft (or any of those builder games...). Not sure why, but it just didn't do it.. I guess I want narrative and story in games rather than an open world builder!
