মাইকেল মধূসুদন দত্তকে পাঠশালায় প্রাথমিক শিক্ষার জন্য ভর্তি করা হয়। সাগরদাঁড়ি দত্তবাড়ির কাছাকাছি পাঠশালা অবস্থিত। যদিও আগেই হাতেখড়ি হয় পরিবারে মায়ের কাছেই।শিশু ছাত্র মধুর যত্নআত্তির কোনো ত্রুটি ছিল না বাড়িতে।মধুজীবনী থেকে জানা যায়,গ্রাম্য পাঠশালায় টিফিনের ছুটিতে অন্যদের মতো মধুসূদন দুপুরের খাবার খেতে গৃহে আসতেন।তাঁর স্নেহময়ী মা বিভিন্ন উপাদেয় খাদ্য নিয়ে পুত্রের জন্য পথ চেয়ে বসে থাকতেন।পুত্রকে সামনে বসিয়ে না খাওয়ালে তাঁর তৃপ্তি হতো না।সবার আগে ক্লাসে পৌঁছানোর জন্য কখনও অল্প খেয়ে কখনও অর্ধসিদ্ধ খাবার খেয়ে উঠে পড়তেন।ক্লাসে কিভাবে সবার চেয়ে শ্রেষ্ঠ হওয়া যায়, এ চেষ্টা ছিল শৈশব থেকেই।
