Grafting had begun!
Expect to see more mysterious photos of weird cut trees with plastic ties around the branches! This one is a wild plum, grafted with two varieties of plum cultivars.

@creativetruth ·
Can you give me some tips for grafting?

I'm going to have to make another attempt this year on my dwarf apple trees, and last year my attempt didn't take. I used a Whip and Tongue graft, but it wasn't very tight the way I cut it, which is why I think the cambium layer did not graft. Had a hard time cutting the tree branch that was heading in a lateral direction, too.

Cleft grafts work best for beginners? Is that electrical tape? Which way is easiest way to graft for beginner?

OK so hubby is too busy at work so I'll try to reply :) Sorry for the delay!

The easiest way is cleft graft where you split a thicker branch and insert 2-4 scions that are thinned at the bottom, at the edges of the split. The main problem with that graft is slow recovery and possible infection at the very large wound if not sealed properly. Most of the times this graft fails because the wound is not sealed and water evaporates from it and the scions dry out.

Whip and tongue works great even if it is not a very tight fit when cutting. Just make sure to bind the two pieces together tightly. Old timers use raffia first, wrap around tightly and then bees wax on the wound. We use electrical tape as it stretches if pulled and makes a harder grip and then you can ease on the pull and just wrap around to keep the moisture in.

If you have to make just a few grafts, like a dozen a year, not a hundred, it might be worth it to cover each of them with plastic bag and use rubber bands to seal it below the graft union. That keeps the moisture in and helps esp in dry or windy areas.
👍
