For starters, although he is blind he has a formidable Samurai-like ability in battle. He also brings with him a wisdom and mysticism not seen since Obi-Wan in A New Hope. NO. Chirrut is a human-character that was born on the Moon Jedha. Chirrut was previously a "Guardian of the Whills". This is a religious sect with links to the force. The Guardians are an ancient race of warrior-monks with a deep spiritual understanding of the force, without actually being Jedis. Through his being in tune with all that is around him, Chirrut is a very skillful warrior, which is displayed several times in the film. His blindness also ties nicely with Obi-Wan's original message to Luke that his eyes could deceive him.
