The Dubai Duty Free Irish Open Final Day. Wined and Dined

I go to the golf every couple of years depending on its location but I managed to score VIP tickets to this one so I was not going to leave this one behind. It was Sunday , the final day at Lahinch in Co Clare, it was sunny and it had that great Irish festival atmosphere vibe all about the place. Not many courses can pull it off but Lahinch with the help of Paul Mcginley did just that. So much so that golfers were asking for the open to be held there the next year. The course is just a stones throw from the town. It is one of the nicest links I have ever been to. I played Ballybunion and Portmarnock last year two of the worlds best golf links but I do not think they were as nice as this one. I was talking to a German guy who attended the Munich open a while back and he said he could not get a good view of the holes because the course was flat. He couldn't believe his luck in Lahinch standing on a hill or a sand dune. There were hundreds of them so you could always see a golfer take his shot.

The thing about watching live golf is that it is not as good as watching it on television. I know what you are thinking, what the hell did you go for then?? . It's a long day, the crowds can hinder your view. You have two choices. You can either follow a player or stick by a hole and let the golfers come to you. I sat on the 10th for a while but then I decided to follow John Rahm. I wanted to see the big guy in the flesh and I also wanted to see him in action. He is only 24 and is one of the world's top golfers. A future number 1. I got every second shot he had taken because instead of rushing down to the next spot where the ball may land, I mosied up another bit to the place where he aiming which was normally the green.
I followed John boy until the 15th. His drives were unbelievable. They sounded different than my ones. They went further as well. He went over 340 yards with a couple of drives. I may go and watch the highlights to see how far they actually went. He made it look effortless. From the 15th I ran back to the Dell building where dinner awaited. Oh and one of these bad boys. They were free. It would be rude not to.

We were finished just in time to see Rahm on the 18th. I love the 18th at Lahinch. The entire hole runs parallel to a road very like Saint Andrew's. There is something great about a road next to a hole. The flurry of activity. The police on bikes eating ice creams. The locals chatting about the golf. Young people and old people just enjoying all that it had to offer and the weather was great for once.

Johnny Rahm's tee shot on the 18th went left. His first mistake of the day. He was leading now and the added pressure on the last hole was telling. He made it out of the rough and into near the stands on the right. Not a bad lie but difficult. He landed his 3rd on the green but rolled off the back. Chipped and putt and he dropped a shot. He was still ahead by 2. .He had not won yet as there were still players out on the course. The gallery gave him a huge applause He was a favourite of ours. He always has been ever since he won two years ago. Coming off the hole I could see his girlfriend waiting by the grandstand. She gave him a big hug and the couple across the road getting patted on the back by eager golf fanatics that could not believe the access.

We walked down and met the top Irish golfer Shane Lowry who was very nice giving some kids a photo opportunity. It was really nice to see him smiling with the kids.

Overall the Irish Open was considered a huge success with a popular venue and a popular winner. The village itself was a hive of activity where celebrities , footballers , golf journaists, caddies , golfers and @niallon11 mixed with the locals and everyone just had a great time. I would like to see it be held in Lahinch again. There are too many run of the mill parkland courses near big cities on the European Tour. This was something entirely different. And I heard a few top golfers were saying the same thing. They absolutely loved the course and the relaxed atmosphere around the place. This is what an Irish Open Golf tournament is all about.

I was actually standing just to the left of those photos. I was up against the wall by the 18th when rahm finished his round. It was a great week up in lahinch but the body is a bit broken from it. We have a week long festival in miltown this week as well so it's a tough fortnight for the locals.
