<center>The demand for Cosmetics and personal care products all around the world has been on the increase both by Teens and Adults, men and women, most especially women, even some old people who yearn for rejuvenation often demand more than an average Teen or Adult. The essence of this post is to highlight the toxic ingredients (chemicals) found in these products and possible precautions to avoid their devastating effects.</center>

<center>The chemicals found in these products are of three segments - Metal impurities, Preservatives and fragrances. But i'm going to identify the commonly found chemicals in the cosmetics and personal care products and their health risks.
When it comes to safety, the presence of lots of chemicals in a product are arguable. They are either added to it, intentionally due to the production processes, to reduce an effect or unintentionally due to its nature. More reason consumers should always be aware of the inclusion of these products and their possible side effects.</center>

<center>Different people with different skin type and reactions. Some skins react immediately to toxic chemicals by quick change : eruptions, deformations, irritations etc in their appearances while it may take some time for others to respond to this. Either of the ways, the resultant effects is my concern which are mostly grievous and health threatening.</center>

**Some of the toxic chemicals includes**:

* Parabens.
* Quaternium-15 and Other Formaldehyde-Releasing Preservatives.
* Lead.
* PEG Compounds. ...
* Butylated Compounds (BHT, BHA)
* Phthalates.

<center>*Preservatives*</center>
---------------------------------------------

<center>https://steemitimages.com/DQmbqvzsLHiqVhLBu2UD958Fg8MFyD916r9ZgmFK4zKE3gV/preservative.jpg[src](https://www.google.com.ng/imgres?imgurl=http%3A%2F%2Fblog.hellocharlie.com.au%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2015%2F01%2Fpreservatives-3.png&imgrefurl=http%3A%2F%2Fblog.hellocharlie.com.au%2Fpreservatives-in-skincare-good-ones-bad-ones-and-how-to-avoid-altogether%2F&docid=_YVcGgP2esPZqM&tbnid=eS_wTGOhbCaH5M%3A&vet=10ahUKEwjsgKSIhNjaAhXqI8AKHRhDDigQMwibAigGMAY..i&w=740&h=487&bih=613&biw=1366&q=preservatives&ved=0ahUKEwjsgKSIhNjaAhXqI8AKHRhDDigQMwibAigGMAY&iact=mrc&uact=8)</center>

<center>Chemicals are added to cosmetic product in the form of fragrances and preservatives to have a good odour and appearance to the users and to increase the shelf life of the product. Preservatives, the usual term for biocides used in cosmetics, are chemical compounds added to prevent the growth of microorganisms. They are intended to be added to clean products to prevent contamination by consumers while in use. They are not intended to make up for poor production hygiene or the use of contaminated raw materials and should not be used to treat contaminated products.</center>

<center>The most common preservative used is **paraben** (i.e. methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben) and formaldehyde releaser (i.e. quaternium - 15, Dimethylol dimethyl hydantoin, imidazolidinyl urea, diazolidinyl urea).</center>

<center>**"Parabens*"* are the most common preservatives in the cosmetic especially on cream-based products. Cream basically consists of emulsions of water and oil, where water containing cosmetics are more prone to microbial contamination. It is antimicrobial mixture which prevent the microbial activity in cosmetic creams. A mixture of paraben with other classes of preservatives offer powerful antimicrobial activity against an extremely broad spectrum of microorganism. It has relatively low toxicity, good stability non-volatility, formulated well because they have no perceptible odour or taste, are practically neutral, do not produce discoloration, and do not cause hardening or “muddying” in cosmetic formulation.</center> https://steemitimages.com/DQmVp1HDwUZwaFk8jUQe3p5Na6xyb14JRrHXnEzUZbNqi2W/parabens.jpg https://steemitimages.com/DQmYMH7peRmjQrkHVHRVPxBZk31mUxQtSymy6MHZNnXYZHz/paraben.jpg https://steemitimages.com/DQmS1DwGPYztqQtC5vTkhy9Bru7s7XeFYPLYipbUBskRZ8Y/parabe.jpg https://steemitimages.com/DQmQeomEhTSHuNKQTCS7g3AANsN2tAJt4RxCxRE6bfiRrEo/para.png[1](https://www.google.com.ng/imgres?imgurl=https://www.safetyandcarecommitment.com/sites/scc_us/files/preservatives-img.png&imgrefurl=https://www.safetyandcarecommitment.com/Ingredients/Preservatives&h=561&w=616&tbnid=RFihybfKzZKeyM:&tbnh=182&tbnw=200&usg=__zMJl5s22mnl1qUBZj6qJsp1fiTg%3D&vet=1&docid=KdC9KqtuE5gtDM&itg=1&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjl_K2R_tfaAhVbGsAKHQe0ALoQ_B0I8QEwEw) [2](https://www.google.com.ng/search?q=Parabens.&tbm=isch&source=iu&ictx=1&fir=MmJyYezPPwOSzM%253A%252CxoFUcI00oXi_vM%252C_&usg=__p3wIkYaLaupVNxCGZjA3WhpWdqM%3D&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjl_K2R_tfaAhVbGsAKHQe0ALoQ_h0I-QEwFw#imgrc=MmJyYezPPwOSzM:) [3](https://www.google.com.ng/search?q=Parabens.&tbm=isch&source=iu&ictx=1&fir=sahEKBmh5V0IfM%253A%252Cr1Mt9cbBjsjLrM%252C_&usg=__8517vOZ4T1051DyRefkoVaTJ40s%3D&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjl_K2R_tfaAhVbGsAKHQe0ALoQ_h0I9QEwFQ#imgrc=sahEKBmh5V0IfM:) [4](https://www.google.com.ng/search?q=Parabens.&tbm=isch&source=iu&ictx=1&fir=iEOhBhGtIyUazM%253A%252CoGbU9dvaJaGL6M%252C_&usg=__aznio1LiwfC1dfZxG4ukimwjurQ%3D&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjl_K2R_tfaAhVbGsAKHQe0ALoQ_h0I_QEwGQ#imgrc=iEOhBhGtIyUazM:)

<center>Chances are that **Parabens** are harmful. Some studies proved that some parabens can mimic the activity of the hormone estrogen in the body's cells, and while it's activity is associated with actual forms of breast cancer, parabens have been spotted in breast tumors. They are carcinogenic. A past research i read focused on how parabens fuel the growth of existing cancer cells through their estrogenic activity. But in another study that was published earlier this year, Dr. Darbre asserted that parabens may be carcinogenic, that is, they can transform healthy cells into cancer cells.</center>

<center>Formaldehyde releasers commonly found in rinse-off cosmetics like shampoo. Formaldehyde releaser is substance in which it release formaldehyde by hydrolysis in the presence of water.</center>

**The table below list the example of preservatives detected in the cosmetic products**.

<center>http://article.sapub.org/image/10.5923.j.phr.20150501.02_001.gif[preservatives](http://article.sapub.org/10.5923.j.phr.20150501.02.html)</center>

<center>*Fragrances*</center>
----------------------------------------------

These chemicals are the most frequent sensitizer toward skin in cosmetics product. Fragrance and flavour substances are organic compounds with pleasant odours. They are ubiquitously used in perfumes and other perfumed cosmetic products, as well as in detergents, fabric softeners, and other household products. Fragrance was used to mask unpleasant odours from raw materials.
Kinds of fragrance in cosmetic include linalool, limonene, hexylcinnamal and butylphenylmethylpropional. Linalool and limonene are among the most frequent fragrance used in cosmetics formulation. Both of these fragrances can be found in many type of beauty products such as shampoos, hair conditioner, shower gels, rinse-off creams and lotions products. Some examples of fragrances are listed in the table below.

<center>http://article.sapub.org/image/10.5923.j.phr.20150501.02_002.gif[fragrance](http://article.sapub.org/10.5923.j.phr.20150501.02.html)</center>

Linalool is a naturally occurring terpene, present in large amounts in various plants. Pure linalool is not allergenic or a very weak allergen, but autoxidizes on air exposure and the oxidation products can cause contact allergy. Limonene is one of the most inexpensive fragrance materials and used in large volumes for household products. This substance forms allergenic oxidation products during handling and storage. The sensitizing potential of limonene increases with prolonged air contact at room temperature, when it is oxidized to allergenic derivatives.

<center>*Heavy Metals Impurities*</center>
----------------------------------------------------------

Heavy metals can appear as impurities in finishing products. It is a byproduct during the cosmetics manufacturing process either formed by the breakdown of ingredients, or an environmental contaminant of raw ingredients. It is acknowledged that heavy metal impurities in cosmetic products are unavoidable due to the ubiquitous nature of these elements, but should be removed wherever technically feasible.

Some of heavy metal incorporated because of its function. For instance, press powder for eye shadow main ingredients are talc with pigments and zinc or magnesium stearate used as a binder. A metallic brilliant finish is created by copper, aluminium, brass, gold, or silver powders. Heavy metals such as cadmium, copper and lead retained as impurities in the pigments of eye shadows, or they are released by the metallic devices used during the manufacturing of products.
 These heavy metals are found in shampoo, lipstick, cream, eye shadow and powder. The type of ingredient used, the type of colorant used in decorative cosmetics and the inadequate purification of raw material influence the heavy metals impurities presence in cosmetics. https://steemitimages.com/DQmWRLirMtcAw43Ph1YfrjHhVjxukfiDqvAiEWSTeEcTVzS/mak%20up.jpg https://steemitimages.com/DQmXzgtuU6JRikxnNLafaXFLeVFUgAKumymsTCMuUeuvgfg/oldie.jpg [1](https://www.google.com.ng/imgres?imgurl=https%3A%2F%2Fsheerluxe.com%2Fsites%2Fdefault%2Ffiles%2F2017%2F08%2Flook-fantastic-bobbi-brown.jpg&imgrefurl=https%3A%2F%2Fsheerluxe.com%2F2017%2F08%2F30%2F12-make-products-every-woman-needs&docid=7P1oShMTPo6oKM&tbnid=GWC65T_PstkvkM%3A&vet=12ahUKEwiY6dHjitjaAhWDC8AKHY-RAQ44rAIQMygpMCl6BAgAECo..i&w=960&h=500&bih=613&biw=1366&q=woman%20making%20up&ved=2ahUKEwiY6dHjitjaAhWDC8AKHY-RAQ44rAIQMygpMCl6BAgAECo&iact=mrc&uact=8) [2](https://www.google.com.ng/imgres?imgurl=https%3A%2F%2Fmedia.gettyimages.com%2Fphotos%2Fsenior-woman-making-up-for-party-picture-id880654204%3Fs%3D170667a&imgrefurl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.gettyimages.com%2Fdetail%2Fphoto%2Fsenior-woman-make-up-royalty-free-image%2F172754557&docid=jCfQUrCoNwTa2M&tbnid=Rin45Y-iCbs51M%3A&vet=12ahUKEwiY6dHjitjaAhWDC8AKHY-RAQ44rAIQMygHMAd6BAgAEAg..i&w=509&h=339&itg=1&bih=613&biw=1366&q=woman%20making%20up&ved=2ahUKEwiY6dHjitjaAhWDC8AKHY-RAQ44rAIQMygHMAd6BAgAEAg&iact=mrc&uact=8)

<center>*Warning!*</center>
-------------------------------------

* <center>The increasing quest to look good and for beauty grows geometrically and it seems a very difficult task to refrain from using these chemically blended substances. Nevertheless, some pharmaceutical companies and firms do produce some of these products using naturally blended roots, herbs, fruits and leafs to meet the utmost demand of the body hence such products are considerably expensive. nevertheless parts of these products still contain some amount of preservatives. </center>

* <center>*"When you have irritation, discontinue the use"* I notice this clause almost on all chemical products. That is, home, medical, body care products that have chemical blends often have this clause at the base of the manual for use of such product. It is very obvious reason for its inclusion. All chemically blended products in one way have their dark side (side effects). Prolonged use of chemically blended products is liable to cause a serious health (especially skin) hazard. These can be detected at the immediate use of some highly concentrated products like creams, where the reaction reflects just when the product is used.</center>
* <center>Researchers found detectable levels of lead, cadmium, chromium, aluminum and a few other heavy metals in common brands of lipsticks. The concentration of these products cannot be guessed by any feature like colour/ lustre or texture as per their study.Traces of these substances can accumulate over time and It is therefore important to use and maintain these products hygienically. Potentially, they cause severe adverse effects in a long run when exposed in significant although minute quantities. Lead is known to cause neurotoxicity, cadmium effects on kidneys and bone and some cancers, aluminium can cause bone diseases and kidney impairment for examples.</center>

* Also, using products beyond their expiry could have increased chances of causing harm due to denaturation and change in compounds often evidenced by a change in texture and a rancid smell or taste. Keeping cosmetics are best preserves when in cool, dark and dry conditions.
