Another day at the seashore, but no sunset this time. It was at the beginning of January, & in midwinter the sun is only strong enough at noon to make cycling somewhat comfortable. | Mal wieder ein Tag an der Küste, aber ohne Sonnenuntergang. War Anfang Januar, & im Winter ist die Sonne nur mittags stark genug, um das Radeln halbwegs angenehm zu machen.

First I went to my usually starting spot at the south port to take a picture of the Panachaiko. This winter was comparatively dry, so there was not (yet) a lot of snow on the mountains. | Zuerst fuhr ich zu meinem üblichen ersten Stopp an der Küste, am Südhafen, um ein Bild des Panachaiko aufzunehmen. Dieser Winter war relativ trocken, weshalb es auf den Bergen (noch) nicht viel Schnee gab.

Since there was nothing going on, no birds, no clouds, I moved further south. The sea was very smooth & still almost nothing to see. So, I was quite happy when a ship came in. | Da an dieser Stelle nichts los war, keine Vögel, nicht mal Wolken, fuhr ich weiter nach Süden. Das Meer war sehr ruhig & es gab immer noch nicht viel zu sehen. Also war ich recht froh, als ein Schiff ankam.

Just a ferry, but still looks quite nice, particularly against the backdrop of the north coast of the Gulf of Patras: | Nur eine Fähre, aber sieht doch recht nett aus, v.a. mit der Nordküste des Golfs von Patras im Hintergrund:

Moving further south, I came across another shrine for a victim of a traffic accident. This one took up a lot of room. I wonder whether that's allowed here or whether the police just turns a blind eye. | Noch ein Stück weiter südlich kam ich an einem weiteren dieser Schreine für Unfallopfer vorbei. Dieser war ein wenig exzessiv. Frage mich, ob das hier erlaubt ist, oder ob die Polizei sich nur nicht drum kümmert.

Then midway between Patras & Monodendri, I found a spot where I had not been before. Drove along, but never actually went to the coast line. It's quite rocky there & not many people seem to go there. Should have tried that spot before, because it turned out to be quite interesting. | Auf halbem Wege zwischen Patras & Monodendri fand ich dann einen Küstenabschnitt, den ich mir noch nicht näher angesehen hatte. War bisher immer nur vorbeigefahren. Dort ist es recht steinig & es gibt nicht viele Besucher. Hätte mich früher schonmal dort umsehen sollen, denn es war nicht uninteressant.

The night before, there may have been a rainstorm, & it had obviously stranded a sea urchin: | In der vorhergehenden Nacht hatte es vielleicht ein Gewitter gegeben, wodurch ein Seeigel an Land gespült worden war:

This is probably a [purple sea urchin (Paracentrotus lividus)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paracentrotus_lividus). Since I had never seen a sea urchin from so close (except for the barbecued ones in China), I took a closer look & turned it on its back: | Das ist vermutlich ein [Steinseeigel](https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steinseeigel). Da ich noch nie einen Seeigel aus der Nähe gesehen hatte (abgesehen von den gegrillten in China), schaute ich mir das Viech etwas genauer an & drehte es um:

Between the spines there was a lot of stuff sticking to the sea urchin. As I read, this is intentional. This species seems to use debris as some kind of camouflage. | Zwischen den Stacheln klebte eine Menge Krimskrams an dem Seeigel. Habe gelesen, daß diese Art das absichtlich macht, zur Tarnung.

When I looked closer at the mouth, I noticed that the sea urchin was still alive. The pyramids (that's what the 5 "jaws" are called) were opening & closing, albeit slowly. Therefore I threw it into the water after I took my photos. Probably it had been too long on land to survive, anyway, but you never know. | Als ich mir das Maul etwas näher ansah, fiel mir auf, daß der Seeigel noch lebte. Die Pyramiden (so nennt man die 5 "Kiefer") öffneten & schlossen sich, wenn auch langsam. Daher warf ich ihn ins Wasser, nachdem ich meine Bilder gemacht hatte. War zwar wahrscheinlich schon zu lange an Land gewesen, aber man weiß ja nie.

Beside the sea urchin, there was some other interesting stuff at the coast. Among it was this 3-layered stone: | Neben dem Seeigel gab es noch mehr Interessantes an der Küste. Darunter war dieser dreilagige Stein:

Don't know whether that's natural or not (they use a lot of construction debris here to secure the coastline), but surely looked nice. More interesting than the stones were some empty (?) shells of sea snails which had also washed up: | Keine Ahnung, ob der natürlich ist oder nicht (hier wird eine Menge Bauschutt zur Sicherung der Küste genutzt), aber sah nett aus. Interessanter als die Steine waren jedoch einige leere (?) Schneckenhäuser, die auch angespült worden waren:

Well, that was it almost for the coast. I wanted to get home to eat something. But first there was a fairly nice clamshell (most you find are broken): | Das war es dann auch schon weitgehend mit der Küste. Wollte nach Hause, um etwas zu essen. Zunächst war da aber noch diese recht nett anzusehende Muschelschale (die meisten, die man findet, sind kaputt):

On my way home, I saw that sometimes the firefighters are actually called for fires where people burn their garden waste. Most of these fires just burn out & no one cares. (Which doesn't make the air here better, particularly in winter.) | Auf dem Nachhauseweg konnte ich feststellen, daß doch tatsächlich manchmal die Feuerwehr gerufen wird, wenn Leute ihre Gartenabfälle verbrennen. Meistens brennen diese Feuer einfach aus & niemand kümmert sich drum. (Was die Luft hier im Winter nicht unbedingt besser macht.)

& finally another of those roadside shrines. This one was rather modern in appearance, & took much less space than the other one. | & schließlich war da noch einer dieser Schreine (Ikonostásia) am Straßenrand. Dieser sah deutlich moderner aus & nahm wesentlich weniger Raum ein als der andere.
