Shaoguan - Cycling in the countryside / Umgebungsradeln #3

Didn't have a lot to do that winter of 2006/07, so was cycling a lot. Luckily, the environment of Shaoguan is really inviting in that regard. | War im Winter 2006/07 nicht sonderlich beschäftigt & konnte deshalb recht viel radeln. Glücklicherweise lädt die Umgebung Shaoguans geradezu zum Radfahren ein.

The only thing that was not so nice was the state of the ways. With a bike it was OK, since you go rather slow. But most of the farmers there were using motorbikes, & not the offroad kind. Then again, it's better than pouring tons of concrete into the landscape & can give some nice pictures. | Nur der Zustand der Wege war nicht so toll. Mit einem Rad ging es noch, da man recht langsam ist. Aber die meisten Bauern dort benutzen Motorräder, & nicht solche fürs Gelände. Andererseits ist das natürlich besser, als wenn man Tonnen von Beton in die Landschaft kippt. & es ergibt manchmal recht nette Bilder.

Another problem in China in general is pollution. As you can see, even in rural Shaoguan it can get quite hazy. & that's not fog, & on that particular day there were also no (well, not many) fires to burn chaff. Anyway, in this case it produced some nice pink hue:  | Ein weiteres weitverbreitetes Problem in China ist die Umweltverschmutzung. Wie man sieht, kann es auch im ländlichen Shaoguan ziemlich diesig sein. & das war kein Nebel, & an diesem Tag wurden auch keine (naja, kaum) Ernteabfälle verbrannt. Immerhin ergab das in diesem Fall einen interessanten rosa Schimmer:

At least in Southern China, it is quite common to built tombs & graves into hillsides. Perhaps that's to keep the ghosts happy or just away from the living, I forgot. So, when you're in the hills, you often come across tombs & graves, even whole (private) cemeteries. | Zumindest in Südchina ist es ziemlich normal, Grabstätten auf Hügeln zu errichten. Vielleicht macht man das, um die Geister zufriedenzustellen oder um sie von den Lebenden fernzuhalten. Habe den Grund vergessen. Wenn man in den Hügeln unterwegs ist, sieht man jedenfalls häufig Gräber, oft auch komplette (private) Friedhöfe.

Mostly, you can only reach those via narrow foot paths. In this case I just found this one tomb above. It was probably from some medium wealthy peasant family. Really poor people don't have tombs. | Meistens sind die aber nur über schmale Fußpfade erreichbar. An diesem Tag fand ich nur dieses Grab oben. Es gehörte vermutlich einer mittelmäßig wohlhabenden Bauernfamilie. Wirklich arme Leute haben nicht derart ausgebaute Grabstätten.

I will probably post some cemetery/tomb-dedicated posts in the future, since I have come across a lot of tombs over the years. | Werde wahrscheinlich in der Zukunft noch einige auf Gräber fokussierte Beiträge verfassen, da ich über die Jahre so einige davon gefunden habe.

Also nice for me is the fact that there is a lot of water in Canton. OK, in summer mosquitoes might drive you crazy, but in winter they are not a problem. So you can enjoy little idylls like this: | Was mir an Kanton auch gefällt, ist das ganze Wasser. OK, im Sommer machen einen die Mücken verrückt, aber im Winter sind sie kein Problem. Dann kann man so kleine, idyllische Szenen fotografieren:

Then I met the pig from the first shot. It was wandering around in a small village, looking for food in garbage heaps. Sadly, there was some dust inside the lens of my camera, & depending on the light this really showed in the images. | Danach lief mir die Sau aus dem ersten Bild über den Weg. Es lief durch ein kleines Dorf, auf der Suche nach Futter. Leider war etwas Dreck innerhalb des Objektivs. & je nach Lichteinfall machte das die Bilder fast unbrauchbar.

Beside pigs & dogs, you can also see a number of birds. But, this being China, they keep a healthy distance from humans. The best I could do that day: | Neben Schweinen & Hunden sieht man dort auch viele Vögel. Aber da das nunmal China ist, bleiben die auf Distanz zu Menschen. Das war das Beste, was ich tun konnte:

Chinese just love colourful lights. So, when you then go home through the city, you see a lot of places which overdid it a bit: | Chinesen lieben bunte Lichter. Wenn man dann abends durch die Stadt nach Hause fährt, sieht man nur allzu oft Gebäude, bei denen man es etwas übertrieben hat:

The next time out I stayed a bit closer to the city. Still, sometimes it looks like a rural idyll. | Beim nächsten Ausritt blieb ich ein bißchen näher an der Stadt. Trotzdem findet man auch dort manchmal idyllische Szenen:

Shaoguan is still a fairly poor city. Back then it was perhaps even more so. (Or they have understood by now, that it's no use wasting money on big lightshows, if your public services suck big time.) You could see that by the state of the roadsides (the roads were largely OK). This is a bus stop: | Shaoguan ist immer noch eine relativ arme Stadt. Damals war das vermutlich noch schlimmer. (Oder sie haben inzwischen begriffen, daß man kein Geld auf Lichtershows verschwenden sollte, wenn die öffentlichen Dienste vernachlässigt werden.) Dies ist eine Bushaltestelle:

A little bit further was this small landslide. Obviously the authorities were satisfied that it didn't actually move into the road & left it unattended at least until I left Shaoguan that summer. | Ein kleines Stück weiter war dann der obige Landrutsch. Offenbar war man zufrieden damit, daß er es nicht bis auf die Straße geschafft hatte. Man ließ das Ganze jedenfalls so, bis ich Shaoguan in dem Sommer verließ.

Above you can see the stark difference between how poorer Chinese live & how the middle class does. In Shaoguan's case the poorer ones lived right at the riverside. | Oben sieht man den oft krassen Unterschied in den Lebensverhältnissen in China. Im Vordergrund sieht man Häuser der unteren Mittelklasse & Unterklasse, im Hintergrund die der Mittelklasse. Im Falle Shaoguans lebten die Ärmeren näher am Fluß.

Later in Shaoguan, they realised that the riverside is actually a nice place to live & they tore down all these small, old buildings, to build new residential highrises (well, this being Shaoguan, not that high). | Später hat man dann in Shaoguan begriffen, daß das Flußufer eigentlich recht angenehm für's Wohnen ist & man riß alle diese älteren Gebäude ab & stellte Wohntürme hin.
