The Surge - A Walk in the Park Review
![01_TheSurge_A_Walk_in_the_Park.jpg](https://res.cloudinary.com/hpiynhbhq/image/upload/v1512672853/sozqqeqfkcsqqzn615ue.jpg)

**The Surge appeared earlier this year and passed unnoticed by many. The title, which was clearly inspired by the Souls series, introduced its own scifi twist and allowed you to survive in a rundown facility where machines and casual workers ravage the scene. After a handful of weapons 'packs' and half a year on the shelves to have The Surge gets his first major expansion, A Walk in the Park. It gets rid of the gray tone of the basic game. The extension gives you the keys to an abandoned amusement park and contains a mountain of weapons, implants and armor to get started.**

What i need to mention right away is that the dlc can only be bought if you have the basic game. Instead of a standalone expansion, it functions more like Bloodborne 's The Old Hunters-dlc that is part of the game. Creo World can be reached by boarding an expired train in the second level, which for some players means that they have to do the necessary backtracking. Since in our 'save' we were already far in New Game Plus, this trip felt quite difficult and we would have preferred to see the makers incorporate a sort of 'fast travel' option. We understand the reason the developer has for adding the content in this way, but there will be a little later.

As i said earlier, Creo World, the family-friendly amusement park attached to the Creo facility, is the main setting for the DLC. In the park you can go on a rollercoaster, the mascot with a donut head and a big candy stick beat together and take on a gigantic mechanical cat. It is a captivating world to explore with vibrant colors and many surprises that we have not seen in the industrialized world of the basic game. It is the same crazy experience we experienced in titles like Dead Rising and Saints Row, which is a pleasant surprise, considering how seriously the original took itself.

![eH7m6wagev93Gp5N4EPdiQ.jpg](https://res.cloudinary.com/hpiynhbhq/image/upload/v1512673175/yst89rtnsr3mt4ek1s1i.jpg)

Much of the story takes place around following what appears to be the last survivor in the park, who communicates with you via a hacked drone. You follow his instructions to get the energy back in certain areas, to look for missing survivors and to discover the remains of a helicopter crash. We discover little about the actual reason that the amusement park for the chaos in the park and instead we have to connect the hints themselves through a series of audio logs. This is a huge missed opportunity, especially because the dlc trailers suggested that there would be more story.

Although we do not want to give too much away, we want to draw some attention to some bosses and enemies that you find in this new world. The most challenging and memorable for us was the gigantic mechanical cat that you try to crush with its spinning tail and jump on top of you. In the park you will also find some new enemies, including 'melee' attacking drones, loose park mascots and enemies that can heal themselves. The first and the last ones force you in particular to adapt your playing style to their attack patterns.

Returning to the earlier point: A Walk in the Park even remedies some shortcomings of the basic game, which makes the whole a more rounded experience. The Surge had a pretty tough jump to the third quarter of the game, which was an obstacle to our progress. The expansion now addresses this problem by adding this new area, where you get the chance to build yourself up with some 'tech', better implants and weapons. This can even persuade players who have stopped out of anger to pay a visit to the park.

The dlc does not change any of The Surge's game mechanisms, which can be seen as a plus or minus depending on your judgment on the basic game. As far as i know, long-range weapons still lack, This is particularly annoying because many of the new enemies have more range than you. That said: it succeeds again on the same points as the basic game. Final boss battles are compelling and are a real test of your skills (something the title of the dlc does not suspect) and the environment is beautifully linked together, where there is never a clear path that is too far from your base.

A Walk in the Park can roughly be traversed in four hours, which is not great for the asking price of 14.99 euros (if you already have the basic game). For those who are attracted by the dlc and have not played the game before, there is now a Complete Edition available for 59.99 euro - given it is the Complete Edition, there is probably no dlc after this. So although A Walk in the Park once again excited us for the game, there are no plans for future content.

Ironically, A Walk in the Park dares to be different and drastically abandons the basic game. It thus provides an absurd ride from start to finish. It offers a mountain of new weapons and implants, some memorable final battleships and even resolves some of the late 'grind' from the basic game. It may not be that long and does not solve the original problems of the basic game, but in the end A Walk in the Park offers an entertaining trip that can leave you both laughing and frustrated.

✔ Get off the serious tone of the main game; many more weapons, implants and armor; helps to soften the late 'grind' from the main game.

✖ No long distance weapons; no cut-scenes and narrative content; quite short.

**Thanks for reading, I hope you liked it!**
