Poloniex is very well known for holding onto funds and taking very long times to make trades or move out funds. Sometimes up to 2 weeks or more. It has had a LOT of problems recently. 
Also it is a CENTRALIZED exchange so you don't actually own your own private key or own the funds in the exchange. 
Something like bitshares is a decentralized exchange and you have your own private key.

Yes its not easy to use but it is decentralized which almost no exchanges are. So that means much safer.
