#科普#量子物理（18）

公元前三世纪，托勒密王朝时期建立了一座图书馆——亚历山大图书馆，就是这座图书馆，在之后的七个世纪里无数人类精英汇聚在此。也因此图书馆中集有世界各地的图书和手稿，并且鼓励和资助学者们的科学研究。
 
卡尔·萨根在《宇宙》里说到“在历史长河当中，科学文明曾在某个时刻得到巨大发展，那便是亚历山大图书馆存世之时。”像今天还在不停探究的数学、物理学、天体物理学、生物学、医学和文学，都是在这座图书馆里得以发展的。
 
公元前三世纪图书馆的一任馆长埃拉托色尼已经计算出地球的直径了；喜帕恰斯绘制出了星图，并且测量了星体的亮度；欧几里得让几何学系统化；狄俄尼索斯·特拉克斯写出了语法著作，让语言系统化；赫罗菲拉斯第一次神经始于脑部；亚历山大港的希罗除了发明齿轮和蒸汽机之外，还第一个写出了关于机器人的故事《自动机》。图书馆里还藏有阿利斯塔克的手稿，里面记录了地球是如何围着太阳转的、星星在我们很远的地方。
 
这些认识在将近两千年后才重新被拾起。
 
亚历山大成了西方古代的中心和智慧的发源地，不同国家、不同民族、不同文化的人们来到这里，不单单是金融交易，还有知识交流。这座城市很像第欧根尼提出的“世界主义”、宇宙居民的含义。人们因为是同一个宇宙的居民而凝聚一起，而不是因为是同一个民族。
 
那么是什么阻止了文明生根和发展？为什么西方文明陷入在深渊中一千年，直到哥伦布、哥白尼以及与他们同时代的科学家才爬起来，使蒙尘已久的亚历山大时期重见天日？
 
导致如此，原因各方各面，我仅说说我以为的。在那个时期，图书馆从来没有记载过任何科学家和有识之士对当时所谓的政治、经济和宗教产生过质疑。那个时候他们关注的全都是星星是否永恒，而没有一个人在意奴隶制度的优劣。
 
那里面的科学和文化，所有的研究都是为少数权贵保留的，城市里的民众根本不知道图书馆里有哪些伟大的发现。新的成果没有被解释，也没有在民众中普及，所有研究基本上没有给大众带来任何益处。
 
蒸汽的机械技术主要用在了完善武器、破除迷信、取悦王室上，科学家们从来没有萌生过利用机器解放劳动力的想法。古代的伟大智慧结晶几乎没有投用到社会实践中去过，科学也从来没有激发过民众的想象力，也从来没有反对过发展停滞、悲观主义以及神秘主义的奉承。好像他们就蒙头做研究，高高在上的关在屋子里，不与下发生联系，只与上保持关系。
 
最终，当民众烧毁图书馆时，没有人能阻止，大势所趋。
