노숙자

약속시간이 되어 나갈 준비를 한다. 날씨가 제법 춥다. 평소 입고 다니는 외투안에 도톰한 조끼를 겹쳐 입는다. 밖을 나서는데 얼굴에는 찬기운이 돌지만 몸은 따스해서 기분이 좋다. 온탕안에서 얼굴을 내밀고 있는 느낌이랄까..

약속장소까지 가는 길.. 전철 안에서는 더워서 안에 있는 쪼끼를 벗었다. 밖과 안의 온도차가 크다. 자칫 몸상하기 좋은 상태. 여름에는 밖은 덥고 안은 춥고 쌀쌀해지니 밖은 춥고 안은 덥고~~ 인간이 만들어 둔 편리하면서도 억지로 만든 강렬한 변화의 구조다.

코엑스에서 약속이었고. 기다리며 서점에 가서 책을 사고.. 만나서 식사를 하고.. 봉은사에 가서.. . 거대한 부처님상 앞에서 눈을 감고 평온해 지는 시간을 가졌다. 안을 거닐다 고양이를 만나기도 하고.. 카페에서 샷추가를 한 따뜻한 아메리카노를 마시며 수다를 떨고.. 마감시간이 될때 쯤 나왔다.

거리를 다닐 때는 따스하게 챙겨 입고 실내에 들어갈때는 온도에 맞게 하나를 벗거나 둘을 벗거나 하였다. 전철은 오랫동안 따스할 예정이기에 조끼는 빼서 가방안에 넣어 두었다.

전철은 천천히 여유있게 가면서 이모저모 즐기려고 급행이 아닌 완행을 탓다. 여유 있는 공간에 사람들이 여럿 오고가지만 전철의 자리는 중간중간 이빨이 비어 있다.

전철에서 하차.. 에스컬레이터를 타고 올라가 카드를 찍고 나온다. 쌀쌀함이 몸스며온다. 한켠에 의자에서 가방에 넣어 두엇떤 옷을 껴입기로 한다.

긴 의자 한쪽끝에는 노숙자가 팔짱을 끼고 잠들어 있다. 발걸음으로는 3발걸음이나 될까 가깝다. 실제로는 냄세는 안나지만.. 마치 냄새가 나를 덥치는 것만 같은 착각에 잠시 빠진다. 조금은 조급한 마음으로 옷을 꺼내어서 입는다.

갑자기 가슴에 아릿함이 느껴진다. 조심스레 눈을 돌려 관찰해 본다. 도톰한 패딩~~가을잠바 정도 되어 보이는 외투.. 두개의 외투를 꽁꽁 껴입고 계신다. 외투 자체는 최근에 구하신건지 오래되어 않은 듯 보인다. 그 안쪽으로는 먼지와 땀과 이것 저것이 섞여 보이는 카라가 넌지시 나와 있다. 앞에는 생활하는데 필요해 보이는 이런 저런 용품이 담긴 종이백이 3개 보인다.

이제 추워지는 겨울 많은 노숙자들이 고생이겠구나 생각이 든다. 편의에 따라 입었다 벗었다 바꾸었다 할 수 있는 나와는 달리.. 추운 밤을 위해 하나라도 더 입고 잠자리에드실 생각을 하니 먹먹함이 밀려온다. 그렇다고 딱히 무언가를 선뜻해야 겠다는 생각은 안떠오른다. 무거운 마음 들고 애써 뿌리치며 걸어서 집을 향한다. 매정하고 냉정한 것 같아 죄책감이 슬그머니 고개를 든다.

예전에 봤던 뉴스가 떠오른다. 겨울철 외국인들이 추워서 길거리에 있는 초록색 의류함의 옷을 꺼내어 입었다. 그들은 얼마뒤 경찰서에 붙잡혔다. 그것은 누군가를 돕기 위한 것이 아니라 사유재산으로 어딘가로 판매되기 위한 것이기 때문이라고 한다. 전체는 아니고 전체의 72% 정도 가 사유용이라고 한다. 인가를 받고 하는 것들도 있고 불법도 있고.. 좋은옷은 나오는 곳들의 경우에는 정리해서 구제의류업자나 쇼핑몰로 재 판매되기도 하고... 상태가 아쉬운 것들은 동남아 등으로 팔려가기도 한다고 한다. 정말 추워서 저리 꺼내는 사람들에게 안내라도 해주던가 배려를 해줄 수 있으면 좋으련만..

요약 : 전철에서 나가면서 옷갈아 입는데 꽁꽁 껴입은 노숙자를 보았다. 따스하게 옷집고 집들어가면 편히 자는 나를 떠올리고 그 모습을 보니.. 마음이 먹먹해졌다.
