Scouting "virgin" territory can be tough
We have a lot of run sites that we use in Chiang Mai but every now and then someone thinks they have found a new spot that would be perfect for a new gathering. Sometimes they are right, sometimes they are wrong. This wasn't an official event but rather a time to search around and see if the area will be conducive to future treks.

We're still not sure about this one after 10 of us went on a scouting run because while we do enjoy some untouched jungle, this site be a little too jungle-ish.

You gotta take the good with the bad but unfortunately for this particular site, it seems as though we have a combination of obvious trails that are used by farmers and then areas that you need a machete to get through.

You see, the major part of these runs that makes them fun is that the destination isn't supposed to be evident and if you have a clear trail in front of you, that is normally what you end up with. This is fine and dandy but we also want to mix it up with a little bit of the unknown but we also don't want to hurt anyone in the process.

Unfortunately, the brush you see in the first picture was very prevalent in this area and it is extremely sharp and one of our adventurers ended up with a pretty nasty cut because of it. It's kind of weird to consider that someone could be hurt by a plant, but that is exactly what happened.

The area also had some pretty amazing views that made us think twice about doubling back and giving up.

In order for these new sites to be entertaining and fresh we need to have at least some people that are familiar with the topography. It is also kind of important to have some people with us that speak Thai fluently just in case we are trespassing somewhere and the owners are not happy about it. For the most part people don't really mind when we cross their land but imagine if you will that you are sitting on the porch of your isolated home in the middle of nowhere and then all of a sudden 25 people came charging through with ridiculous outfits on. It would probably surprise you especially if you don't know what the Hash House Harriers is.

We are trespassing basically every time that we do one of these things and for the most part people are ok with us being on their land because we don't do any harm to it. However, there are a few "stay off my land" type people out there and we always abide by their demands if they have a problem with us being there.

Even though we are an irreverent bunch, it is not our desire to piss off the locals or make anyone uneasy with our presence.

So if anyone kicks up a fuss for us being on their land for any reason, we will first explain what we are doing and if they say "no" that is the end of it. In the end we are just here to get some exercise and drink some beer, not get in trouble with the cops.

Thankfully, over the years there have only been a few confrontations that looked as though they might get violent and for the most part the people that live in the jungle are happy to see us and smile and wave.

It was a lot of fun trying to make this a new stomping ground for future runs, but in the end it might actually be too dangerous for it to be the case. In the meantime, the search goes "On On!"

If you would like to join us for a run in the jungle with some beers at the end we are always welcoming of new members unless you are a jerk. You can find full details on our website [HERE](www.chiangmai.hhh.com)
