In my Business Low subject, I learn about the legal system in Sri Lanka. Today I bring, information under that topic briefly. Our mother land has mixed legal system, main reason for that is different ethics group live in Sri lanka, they are Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim. Main religion in Sri lanka are Buddhist, Christian, Islam and Hindu. 




Our country invasion by Dutch, Portuguese and British time to time so their legal system also affects for our country in a substantial manner.

Kandyan low, Theasawalamai low and Muslim low are the ethical low system in Sri lanka. Kandyan low in Kandyan province before the foreigner’s invasion. That low mainly affect for people who having lineage with Kandyan province during Kandyan monarchy. That low affect for marriage, divorce and interstate succession. People who have lineage with Kandyan province can select marriage under Kandyan act or general marriage act. If they select marriage under Kandyan low, all the matters related to marriage are governed by Kandyan low. 





Theasawalamai low affect for Jaffna Tamil people who has lineage with Jaffna province. That low also called low of the land because it affects to people in the specific area.

Muslim low used by Muslim ethic group. They can not use general marriage low in marriage. They have to follow Muslim low in marriage.


Portuguese invasion our mother land in 1505. They apply their lows and regulation to our legal system. Dutch and British also do that.



At present Sri Lanka has Roman Dutch low and English low. Among them Roman-Dutch low highly affect. Under that having tired court system. Consists of seven courts. Primary court, magistrate court, district court, high court, court of appeal and supreme court. Each court has different legal capacity. This tired system of court important to reduce marginal errors.
