Will monetary reward destroy genuine interactions in steemit?

<p>Money is vital for our wellbeing and thus is great –I will remiss if I indicate otherwise, however we all know that <code>the love of money is the root of all evil (1</code>Timothy 6:10) because it can lead to greed, jealousy , killings, &nbsp;fake friends and fake promises. Moreover, unlike many other social media platforms, steemit introduction of monetary reward has it upsides:</p>
<p><br></p>
<ul>
  <li>Lifted many poor families from developing countries by giving them the opportunity to earn online</li>
  <li>Helped many people get a full time income opportunity</li>
  <li>Helped many people earn well while doing what they love</li>
  <li>Helped entrepreneurs raise money for their innovative ideas</li>
  <li>Helped people or communities raise money for a good cause</li>
</ul>

<p>Conversely, however, there are downsides to it:</p>
<ul>
  <li><strong>Greed replacing Sincerity</strong> : human nature is fraught with greed so expect many interactions (not all) to be influenced by some form of reward thus going against the real intentions of steemit : genuine social interactions. Moreover, in order to get out as much reward as possible, many people base their strategy on creating a lot of bots account which they use to up vote their comments and posts and thus they have less time and interests &nbsp;for genuine interactions.</li>
  <li><strong>Vote for Vote :</strong> the good intentions of introducing monetary reward on steemit has led to extreme lack of manners of approach from some members (again not the case with majority of &nbsp;good members) which is visible in their comment examples vote for vote and follow for follow. These types of comments have led to flagging and most of the time, loss of social contacts which is a bad thing. Genuine comments, on the other hand, can lead to good financial reward, social interactions and growth in followers on steemit which is a great thing.</li>
</ul>

  <li><strong>Competition :</strong> Genuine competition is great because it leads to innovation. However when reward system lead to jealousy for example, some people not being happy that some members &nbsp;are constantly in hot and trending pages or even some new members monetary rewards are higher than their own- in fact, &nbsp;there should be change in mindset. Reason is that, even though some do get more favorable votes, we should consider their constant quality posts, time invested in growing followers and most importantly, their investments in steem power. Therefore, it is &nbsp;time to stop hating and rather &nbsp;focus on how to personally be a success by benchmarking successful people in order to learn from them and thus be successful like others in the near future.</li>
</ul>
<p><br></p>
<p><strong>Conclusion</strong>: steemit is indeed one of the best social media platform due to &nbsp;a lot of positive things members can do here especially the learning experience. However, monetary reward has caused some issues and thus have its own limitations. The important thing to note , however, is that steemit great communities plus good individuals on steemit platform &nbsp;surpasses all limitations and will make the platform a success.&nbsp;</p>

Nice post Charles I am really glad someone addressed this. I have been here for three weeks and I find nothing but peace and love a far cry from every and all other social media in my experience and I have been on FB for 8 years. What I have learn't is this, incentivise people to be nice and guess what they are nice. Now that may be a sad reality and sure some are fake, but its working and its working extremely well all one need to do to atest to this is visit the others and see how horrid they can be. Steemit and Crypto's truly are a game changer and the biggest contribution to world peace, or the biggest step in that direction anyways. Cheers ;)

In my opinion monetary reward don't destroy the genuine interactions within the community. Honestly, monetary reward and the free knowledge is what bring me here on steemit. It also a reason why I am here up to now. The only one who destroy these best platform is the greed and nothing but the greed!

I think the  monetary rewards attached to steemit is one of the reasons why it keeps and will keep growing,  I remember when I was told about steemit,  I was like "if I can post in other social networks for free,  why can't I do this?"So you see, Many people just love working online and they have taken steemit as an online job.....who doesn't like money???  😁😁😁😁😁😁

One thing is for sure... greed is what is going to distroy all of us and even us as a spieces! Not now but if we keep on going like this slowly in time for sure...
The same greed that sometimes affects Steemit. People should have fun and enjoy this amazing platform. In time the rewards will follow... If everybody will think like this Steemit will be a much cleaner enviorment!

@charles1 I agree with your points, but Steem is not only Steemit and we can use the Steem blockchain to make things that will not fall into the monetary issues you explained. This is what I did with Utopian.io.

Hello @charles1. SMT are not yet available in Steem. Utopian is using the existing Steem functionalities to allow contributors earning rewards. Utopian is based on Steem and uses Steem for every operation. It is just a different frontend with a different purpose :)

Sorry for only put a pin, it was to identify your great post remember sometimes we do not have a lot of time and if you do not identify the post could loose.
Well i loved your point about money in this network, people writte about everything and do not have a line or speciality, and let in this network only with make money, as i say in my presentation money is important but the most important is the knowledge that you could get and shared with your friend here, and the money is the secondary point, you should writte for shared your feedback, for example i wrotte about foraging topics i loved to catch food in the mountain but i study finance in my career for this reason when i saw a topics about money and investment i know a kittle and would like to comment like your good point. We do not let people destroy this net, what do we do only voted an interesting topic about our preferences.

I agree with what you're saying up to a certain point. I don't think it's the monetary reward that is causing the greed, and the poor social interactions. I think those people you mention would be greedy, selfish, and short sighted anyway. But consider social networks without a monetary incentive to be "a good member". Facebook, or YouTube are full of trolls, getting their fix just by being jerks, without any financial reward. 
Instead, I would say we're still in "beta". Not just the platform itself, but us, the actual social network, made up of individual users. Our "steemit culture" is still just developing. But I think as a community we are much better at dealing with trolls than other platforms, and we're getting better every day, thanks to post like yours. They are much appreciated. :-)

I think that has to do with people's personal out look on life. If you believe the world is an abundant place, then you will probably view Steemit as a place where everyone can find their niche... if you view the world as resources are limited, then you may feel jealous of other people's pay outs or see them as competition.

Anyways, just my thoughts. :)

I think that in general the pockets of authentic people have been finding each other and supporting each other with genuine love and appreciation for the content being shared and for the creative and entrepreneurial projects being launched. We are human beings, we all know there is a dark side. Wherever there is light, the dark desire to creep in and try to drink from the happiness and success that is nourishing us all. As long as we know this and observe it, we need not be dragged in to a mud-slinging match, because these people might be desperate or unhappy for reasons we don't understand. We just have to keep generating positivity and support for authenticity with the understanding that nothing can ever be ideal. Perhaps every now and then we can convince one of these unfortunate people that they have more to gain from this wonderful community than just money! Until then, we are busy rewarding those who represent what we REALLY want to see in the future of this platform, and so long as that is true, there can only be awesomeness ahead! Steem on most beautiful steemy creation magicians! I love you all! :D
