How to Achieve the Balance Between Heart and Brain
Many of us are already aware of the relationship between the mind and the body. We know that there is a delicate balance between the two, and we understand the importance of both to our well-being and happiness. But did you know that the brain can affect the heart in ways that are not immediately obvious? Consider the way our brains and hearts react to stressful situations. When we are faced with a problem or conflict, the fight or flight mechanism kicks in, a survival mechanism for our ancestors who had to fight for their lives. In this case, the brain and the heart are trying to engage one another in a high-risk activity. The oxygen in the blood is increased, the heart rate is increased, and our nervous system prepares to respond rapidly with either a surge of Adrenalin or a drop of serotonin.

Unfortunately, this heightened state of blood flow doesn't last long. Our bodies soon go back to normal, but the changes in the brain and heart are still apparent. The heart starts pumping faster, the adrenaline continues to flood our bloodstream, and the mind races with stressful chatter. This is the type of response that can lead to a heart attack, even if the stress does not originate in the heart. As more strain is placed on the arteries leading to the heart, the risk of a stroke rises.

By understanding the role of the brain and the heart in these physiological processes, we can use this knowledge to create a better-balanced lifestyle. There are many ways that we can improve our overall health through exercise. We can improve the stress response and reduce the likelihood of a heart attack or stroke through getting more exercise and using different types of cardiovascular exercise programs. In this article, we'll discuss the importance of exercise to the brain and how this exercise program provides an important link between the heart and brain.

The most obvious way that exercise helps the brain and the heart is that it strengthens the heart and strengthens the arteries. Cardiovascular exercise increases the pumping ability of the heart and strengthens the muscle lining around the heart. This can lower the resting heart rate, lower the blood pressure in the artery walls, and reduce the buildup of waste products in the arteries. The heart is able to pump more blood to supply the body for energy during physical activity. The brain is also able to receive a "blood boost" by receiving oxygenated blood that allows its brain cells to receive oxygen and nutrients.

Other ways that exercise relates to the heart and brain is that the heart and brain can be affected positively by participation in an exercise program. Exercise has been shown to improve mood, increase concentration, help reduce anxiety, and improve memory and learning. As participants exercise, their brain activity is increased as the oxygen and blood flow to the brain increases. This can be beneficial for individuals who experience symptoms of depression as well.

The more you participate in physical activity, the better your overall health will be. Your heart and lung muscles will have a stronger response to stress as your heart pumps the additional blood that provides the extra energy that is needed to move. Proper cardiovascular exercise can be one of the most important components of a heart healthy diet and can help to prevent cardiovascular diseases and heart attack, two of the leading causes of death in America.
