Steem Monsters: a behind-the-scenes look at recording the Medusa quips

The day had arrived. It was time for me to bring Medusa to life for @steemmonsters by recording her [quips](https://steemit.com/steemmonsters/@steemmonsters/blue-splinter-voice-quips-for-voice-actors-and-auditions). I am still super excited for the opportunity to be involved in this game, so I thought it'd be fun to bring you guys along for a behind-the-scenes look at how it went.

Although no female character in Greek mythology is more popular and well known than Medusa, I still did some background googling to get a clear image of her in my mind and to get into character. 

We all know she is the woman with snake hair who turns men to stone with a single glance. She's sexy, powerful and dangerous, and I wanted to bring these characteristics across in my voice.

It also seems perfectly logical to me that she has an Australian accent since Australia is home to the most venomous snakes on the planet.

Luckily for me, [MSP Waves](http://mspwaves.com/) legend @globocop only lives 2km away, and he has a professional recording studio set up in his flat. This was a heaps better option than me trying to do something at my place. There is near 24/7 construction noise going on around here in preparation for the Pope's visit next January. I don't really think jackhammers would enhance the game.

In addition to having access to his studio, I was also very grateful for the coaching I got from Globo. He encouraged me to be a lot more expressive than I would have been on my own so this would come through in my voice. We did 15 takes in about an hour, and between them all, I'm happy with each quip.

Finally, here's an exclusive video I put together for steemit. The first part is some outtakes. It's mostly me fucking up on the grunts but Globo also fucked up on the first one by standing right in front of the camera. I've also included the video of his fist pump and wee jig behind the desk since we had a chuckle at that during playback. 

The last part is the final two recordings. There are more but I've cut it down so you don't have to listen to all 15 takes. To get my yell/grunt I pretended I was going for a snatch PR in Crossfit. I joked that Globo would have to punch me in the stomach to get the second one, but stabbing myself with a sunglasses case turned out to be just as effective and much less domestic violence-y.

The only downside was, my voice was really hoarse for the rest of the day afterwards. But hopefully, you guys think it was worth it.

Hey, @choogirl.

I think you really got into this, and I think what you did with tone and expression for Medusa was great. The hard part would be to get into character, not feel self-conscious and then come up with something you think is good. So the question really is, did you think it was worth it? :)

That's great that @globocop was a) close by, b) has a professional recording studio, and c) that he was there to get as much out of your performance as possible. Very helpful to have someone else who knows something about recording who can help with when things should be dialed up or back.

Do you know if there's going to be any added effects to your voice, or is it going to pretty much be straight up? Nothing worse, I feel, than to do the voice overs and then not be able to recognize it as being your voice.

Thanks for showing us the "blooper reel" and behind the scenes. Always fun. :)
