It is the will of God that we enjoy life and live a happy life. However, He wants us to live life with the proper understanding of his will for our lives. 

God wants us to live not according to how we want  but  according to his will. 
Following God requires the obedience of everything he says or commands. A lot of people want to be successful in life yet do not want to obey God.

It is not so easy following God and doing his will but it is the right way to if you really want to make it in life. People fail not because it is God's will that they should fail but because they always fail to hear what God has to say first.
 
Abraham and Lot journeyed together to an unknown place but parted ways at a point. This was a journey which was inspired and commanded by God and so each phase of the journey had to be directed by God himself. 

At a point where a choice had to be made on which part the relatives has to live, Lot quickly chose the place that seemed good in his eyes. He perceived the plain of Jordan to be the best place to live and so chose to settle there. 
Abraham listened to God's voice before taking a decision and so became more prosperous than his nephew, Lot. 

And Abram said unto Lot, Let there be no strife, I pray you, between me and you, and between my herdsmen and your herdsmen; for we are brethren.  Is not the whole land before you? separate yourself, I pray you, from me: if you will take the left hand, then I will go to the right; or if you depart to the right hand, then I will go to the left.  And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered every where, before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, even as the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt, as you came unto Zoar.  Then Lot chose all the plain of Jordan; and Lot journeyed east: and they separated themselves the one from the other.  Abram dwelled in the land of Canaan, and Lot dwelled in the cities of the plain, and pitched his tent toward Sodom.  But the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners before the LORD exceedingly.  And the LORD said unto Abram, after Lot was separated from him, Lift up now your eyes, and look from the place where you are northward, and southward, and eastward, and westward:  For all the land which you see, to you will I give it, and to your descendants forever.  And I will make your descendants as the dust of the earth: so that if a man can number the dust of the earth, then shall your descendants also be numbered.  Arise, walk through the land in the length of it and in the breadth of it; for I will give it unto you. Gensis 13:8-17

We shouldn't be so wise in our eyes and live unwisely. The voice of God matters more than the voice of man. The will of God is more important than the will of man. 

In all your ways acknowledge God and he will direct your path:
Trust in the LORD with all your heart; and lean not unto your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct your paths.  Be not wise in your own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil. Proverbs 3:5-7
