El nombre Vikingo proviene del nórdico antiguo víkingr, es el nombre que se les da a los integrantes de los pueblos nórdicos de Escandinavia, los cuales en su época incursionaron y causaron algunas revueltas en Europa. Si bien los romanos tenían en sus escritos algunas referencias a pueblos germánicos de Escandinavia y el Mar Báltico, su aparición real en el escenario social y político de Europa comienza a partir de el saqueo al monasterio de Lindisfarne en el año 793, al norte de la Gran Bretaña, saqueo que fue el primero de varios saqueos a algunos monasterios, por lo cual en las crónicas de los siguientes años se relatan historias horribles sobre los Vikingos, por su proceder violento y poco piadoso, aterrorizando a los antiguos pueblos de Europa, que a pesar de estar acostumbrados a la guerra no tenían como hacer frente a las incursiones de estos pueblos de Escandinavia. Estos ataques, en conjunto con los de los húngaros y los ávaros, las rebeliones de los pueblos eslavos en la Europa Oriental, y las revueltas de los árabes en el sur fueron el primer paso para la descentralización política del feudalismo.

Durante los siglos posteriores la civilización vikinga tuvo una gran influencia en el desarrollo cultural e histórico de Europa, gobernando en las islas británicas durante muchos años hasta ser derrotados por los Normandos, descendientes de los vikingos que poseían tierras en Normandía, Francia. Se dice que los vikingos fueron los primeros europeos en llegar a América, pues en sus exploraciones por el Atlántico norte, a través de las islas de Groenlandia, y Terranova, en el extremo norte de Canadá, donde establecieron asentamientos a partir del siglo X. Se cuenta que el primer Vikingo en llegar a estas tierras fue Erick el Rojo, según los descubrimientos de L'Anse aux Meadows, un asentamiento Vikingo que fue descubierto por Helge Ingstad y su esposa, la arqueóloga Anne Stine Ingstad, el cual fue posteriormente declarado como Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la Unesco, esta fue la prueba definitiva de que los nórdicos fueron los primeros europeos en llegar a América, mucho antes que los españoles, en los textos vikingos del siglo XIII. se hace referencia a 4 regiones en las cuales estaría la primera referencia escrita a América, estas regiones eran Groenland (Tierra Verde), Helluland (Tierra de Arroyos), Markland (Tierra de Bosques) y Vinland (Tierra de Viñedos).

También, en la isla de Baffin, se encontraron los restos de un crisol para fundir bronce que data del año 750 aproximadamente, muy similar a otros crisoles de piedra encontrados en Noruega.
