Curly Willow: The Twisted Tree [Bonsai]

Curly Willow is the tree of the day. Please checkout my photos of this twisted tree in my bonsai tree collection.

![20190820_121151.jpg](https://files.steempeak.com/file/steempeak/creativetruth/EGARSjCY-20190820_121151.jpg)

Two main branches are growing around the husk of an old central dead branch. When pruning, sometimes I leave an old branch behind as a reminder of its former glory days, which adds to its colorful story.

![20190820_121219.jpg](https://files.steempeak.com/file/steempeak/creativetruth/di1m8YbD-20190820_121219.jpg)

Inspired by a character from fiction who represents an evil sorceress who lives in a twisted multi-tower castle in the shape of an upraised hand. Inspired from Michael Ende's _The Neverending Story_, the book provides details about her being so beautiful and alluring, her enemies often become her loyal servants even though her words are clearly poison. This tree truly lives up to its namesake. A few years ago it started to beguile me I admit.

I am always hoping this tree will look more creepy in October (Halloween) if I can capture a photo of a blackbird or crow perching on its central limb. That would truly define this as a witch's tree.

Willows are not really ideal for bonsai because many old branches will die back and fall off. I think they are a great first tree for beginners to grow because they are easy to keep them alive, and they produce fast rewards every year to experiment with (many new leaves and branches).

Willows will grow in even poor, dense clay soil, but if you can provide lighter soil that is better. They do not grow well in pure sand, I tested this, as it retains water poorly. Gravel and bonsai soil works great too. As long as the soil is always a bit wet and swampy, the Willow tree is always happy. Some people keep their Willow trees growing constantly submerged partially in a dish of water. This type of tree is able to survive with the lowest roots underwater. In nature, they grow near springs, lakes, and ponds.

It grows long curvy tendrils that extend upward to the sun. They look a bit like witches wands. Green limbs and leaves can be pruned at any time, and it will cause new leaves and limbs to sprout.

I like to clip the branches short to encourage many other smaller branches to sprout. One day I hope this tree will have a mushroom shaped canopy.

![20190820_121241.jpg](https://files.steempeak.com/file/steempeak/creativetruth/nHmuccAh-20190820_121241.jpg)

Old bark on the tree is not particularly beautiful. It has a weathered surface that cracks and flakes off. It forms bumps that sometimes burst, scab, or scar. Again, this makes it a great spooky tree because the bark looks like diseased zombie skin.

![20190820_121137.jpg](https://files.steempeak.com/file/steempeak/creativetruth/28tEPgMt-20190820_121137.jpg)

Today it dawned on me that the character Xayide, who this tree is named after is also likely inspired by another famous witch. Most notably, the White Witch of Narnia, who is famously portrayed in C. S. Lewis's _The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe_ and _The Magician's Nephew_. That witch's name was Jadis, and little is known about her origins.

Both of these witches were cruel, powerful, without compassion, and suffered from the same character flaw. They craved dominion to rule over everyone else, as this was the only way to have people of worth nearby in their presence. Rather than make friends, they manipulate others into becoming their friends. Although this serves towards the goals of a tyrant, ultimately it is their own undoing as rebellion always stirs to topple the tyrant.

From the ashes of the earth, the White Queen always rises again, and returns again to her illustrious castle to rebuild her empire. So is the way with this tree, with its dazzling emerald leaves dancing like flags in the wind on top, and the smooth spires supporting it underneath. Underneath, all of the ostentatious wealth is built on the murderous blood, bones, and stones atop an ancient dynasty.

Be sure to follow my work this week. I'm in the process of sharing the whole host of bonsai trees in my collection. There is over thirty trees I am growing. That means you can enjoy more than a month of fresh content from @creativetruth's back porch.

Share the goodness with me.

Nice willow tree! I like the shape.
Do willows like clay-y soils because clay retains the most water?
Also, I went back and checked out the citrus tree links and I can't believe I actually remembered them. I had no idea it was the same tree.

Well, no tree prefers poor clay soil, but I think this kind of tree tolerates the mucky clay better. Yes, underground clay takes a long time to dry out because there is less air space.

That lime tree is totally different than how it used to look. I am amazed the pair survived after all the branches were removed. That was clearly not what I planned originally.

Are you the only one who names your trees (apart from me)? Or is this typical (proper) bonsai tradition? The musings your trees inspire lead me to believe you name them after they have aged already a bit: formed character so to say. Or do you intuit their individuality and start wiring them accordingly (to enhance the character within)?

Indeed, you speak of wiring in 2017: how long is such wiring on for (no longer to be perceived) and what really has been "forced" into any direction with this tree? When do you start this practice (first number ? of years, I was told you just let the tree grow and grow normally, then cut down to miniature size - roots/top and then if it survives you start training it fully). How large was the cutting? (a mere twig I presume?).

Actually, I have so many questions, I was about to dedicate an entire sitting to ploughing through all your old posts but then discovered you've been at it for quite a while already, and at a remarkable level of high-quality content I think is extremely rare here! A true treat. In any case, I shall follow you closely the coming 30 posts to see what questions will be answered, otherwise I aim to enjoy the (not so tough to take but very durable)-love wisdom that comes with every individual tree.

Browsing anyway, ate some water melon, went to a Viennese ball and enjoyed the [apple tree](https://steemit.com/gardening/@creativetruth/how-to-plant-an-apple-tree-in-a-container-gardening) Andrew Sister's song today - discovering there simply is no end to your talents.

Perhaps, one here is one final question that seems relevant to Xayide: what's going on with the spooky thing with the toothpicks? (Root training contraption? Or just preparing for the Halloween look?)

You have a collection of elevating fairy (tautology there, sorry) tales on your verandah.

For valuable bonsai trees, it is considered wise to keep a log book for the tree. A bonsai master will often write notes every time they work on a tree. I use an online spreadsheet and usually take notes when I do any major work, or notice any problems the tree experienced on a particular day. The reference number I give each tree helps me to find it in the spreadsheet.

I am not sure if there is a tradition of naming trees. Some of the greatest bonsai trees known worldwide are known by the person who styled it and are given a name that often sounds like the title of a book. I think it is ideal if you are raising more than one tree of the same species. Many of my trees are given female names if I consider it beautiful in some way. Some of my trees were named by followers here on the steem blockchain. I did not start naming them until I had so many trees that I realized I would need to start taking notes, or else I will forget which tree is which. Sometimes it is hard to tell them apart, which is why storing the photos in these articles is so important for my records.
